Coles is now offering bulk purchases of its goods, rivalling bulk retailer Costco

The Australian supermarket giant is giving shoppers the chance to slash up to 60 per cent off their grocery bill with new discounted pantry staples.

It was only a matter of time but supermarket giant Coles has finally decided to super-size its products, rivalling bulk-buying giant Costco.

Costco, the US supermarket, buys in bulk at discounted rates and in turn sells the products back to customers at a massive discount.

From today, Coles will offer bulk-sized products in an effort to rival Costco.

By buying in bulk, Coles customers can save up to 60 per cent on some products.

Coles has launched a new super-size range.

Barilla pasta, would usually cost $1.95 for 500g, but now you can get it in a 5kg bag for $14 — saving you 28 per cent.

More than 25 popular Coles products will be offered in value-sized packs from cereals, to baking products and special treats.

The larger product range, including pasta, cereals, cous-cous and breadcrumbs, will be available in stores from today.

Coles CEO Greg Davis warned stocks may vary from store to store and to shop early to avoid disappointment.

“We know our customers look for value when stocking up on pantry staples and offering some of our popular products in bulk is one way we are helping our customers save time and manage the family budget,” Mr Davis said.

You can save 63 per cent on Panko Breadcrumbs. It’s usually $2.70 for 200g but now available in a 5kg bag for $14.

“A great example is the Barilla 5kg bag of spaghetti, which is enough to make 40 main course-sized bowls of pasta and last the average family for a couple of months, or even feed the whole extended family at a celebration.”

Cheltenham mum Simone Piccone said buying groceries in bulk saves her money not just at the checkout but also through the week.

“As a busy mum of twins I buy a lot in bulk, not only to save time, but to get better value,” she said. “We also entertain a lot so I like to make sure my pantry is stocked with healthy meal options.”

Coles new super-size products is to rival US supermarket Costco which opened in Australia back in 2009.

In a bid to stay competitive, rival supermarket Woolworths has announced a 24-hour online sale to retain its customers.

It is selling more than 1000 products at discounted prices.

The sale comes after the success of Woolworths’ recent frozen food sale, where the supermarket slashed the cost of its frozen food aisle by 50 per cent.

The online sale will run until 11.59pm on Wednesday, May 15.
