Coles and Woolworths cut price of Aussie rock lobsters for Christmas
Woolworths has dropped its price of this luxury festive food to match the “lowest price” all year Coles offered on the expensive item.
Supermarkets are selling an expensive Christmas staple for the lowest price it has been all year.
Coles announced it was selling lobsters for just $22 from Wednesday, prompting Woolworths to slash the price of its rock lobsters too.
Coles supermarket was selling its Western Australian Rock Lobsters for $27 each in November, but as of December 22, shoppers can nab the luxury Christmas delicacy with a further $5 off.
In response, Woolworths has now also cut its WA Rock Lobsters to $22.
It expects customers to buy more than 100 tonnes of the lobsters across the three weeks of Christmas, compared to 70 tonnes last year.
“We’ve continued to offer Rock Lobster through the year and have nearly doubled our order this Christmas, as customers look to support local Australian producers and make what’s traditionally a delicacy more accessible,” said Woolworths’ Commercial Director for Meat and Seafood, Tim Dudding.
Coles said it is gearing up for its biggest week of the year with customers buying more than 70 per cent more seafood in December compared to an average month.
A whopping 40 per cent of its annual lobster sales will be made in the days leading up to Chrissy.
But it’s not just lobsters that are a huge hit. Prawns are also high on the list with customers expected to purchase 10 times as many as they would in an average week.
“We are delighted to be able to make great quality and responsibly sourced Australian seafood like WA Rock Lobsters more affordable so more Australians can treat themselves this Christmas Day,” Coles’ general manager for Bakery, Deli and Seafood, Andy Mossop said.
“Alongside our customers’ love for lobsters, our data has also revealed that prawns are our
customers’ third-favourite Christmas food from Coles.”
Meanwhile Matt Rutter, Geraldton Fishermen’s Co-Operative CEO, hailed Australians’ “renewed love affair” with the lobsters.
“We’re excited to be working with Woolworths to ensure more Australians can access sustainable, healthy, premium WA Rock Lobster at affordable prices this holiday season,” he said.
