A foul letter sent by an anonymous author to a Perth cafe has sparked uproar after it took aim at the appearance of the young female employees.

Thousands have come to the defence of a cafe after it was posted a foul letter which accused staff of being “off-putting” because of their appearance.

A recent diner typed out and printed the horrible letter, which the cafe Gipsy Boy has chosen not to share, and mailed it to the Joondalup business, north of Perth, last week.

The anonymous author told staff, most of which were young female university students, their “plump” bodies had put them off their food.

“It’s horrible. We’ve had staff here with eating disorders and obviously today’s society and social media is very different to back in the day,” co-owner Bekki Robbins told news.com.au.

In the popular cafe’s eight years of business, Ms Robbins said it had never received a complaint directly targeting the appearance of its 15-strong workforce.

Ms Robbins and fellow owner Kacie Healing were repulsed to receive the “disgraceful” letter on Wednesday last week, and found it so disturbing they decided not to show their staff.

The note described said the appearance of staff was “really quite off putting”, “distasteful”, and had “put them off their food”.

“Just the fact they said it put them off their food was just crazy,” Ms Robbins said.

“No one that works here has short shorts on or anything revealing, and all of the girls that work here are 19 and 20.

“They fact they were willing to say that to our staff is crazy.”

She added that while all staff were “beautiful girls”, the business didn’t hire people based on their looks.

“I think it’s just a horrible thing to do.”

The cafe addressed the matter in a post to Facebook, and directly addressed the “disgraceful customer” who sent a letter “complaining about our ‘plump staff’”.

“We would like to apologise if we made you uncomfortable for displaying what real women look like,” the post read.

“To avoid further disappointment, please do not bring yourself or your outdate opinions on what the female body should look like back into our cafe ever again.

“Yours sincerely, Kacie, a plump gal.”

Loyal supporters were fast to back up staff and slam the person behind the letter.

“Wait? What? How very dare someone be so incredibly rude and egotistical. I’m speechless. Obviously someone really badly brought up,” one wrote in a comment.

A local told news.com.au said the letter was an example “there are still people who heavily judge fat people and literally scan the room”.

The business has since received floods of support from across the country, with people promising to travel from all corners of Perth to put their money where their mouth is.

“There have been a lot of people saying they’re going to come now, and never knew we existed before this happened. Others say they live south of the river but will now come and support us,” Ms Robbins said.

The business has used the incident to highlight its firm stance on rejecting body shaming.

“Body shaming is NOT ACCEPTABLE! All bodies are beautiful and we are most definitely #plumpnproud here at Gipsy Boy.”
