Shoppers were treated to an incredibly unexpected sight while stocking up on groceries.

Footage showed two police officers at an Aldi in Chicago rummaging through the fridge section using a broom.

One of the officers suddenly stuck his hand inside the fridge and pulled out an animal.

It wasn’t a rat or possum like many guessed, instead, it was a coyote.

A coyote is a canine, meaning it is related to a wolf and dog, but usually a bit smaller and lighter than a wolf.

After it was freed, the animal tried to dive back into the fridge.

Edward Farrer, a podcast host for the Barstool network, shared the clip online.

“I was prepared to see him pull out a possum or a raccoon. Did NOT expect that,” he declared.

Social media users were in shock.

“Was that a wolf? Holy sh*t,” one person said.

Another added: “Apparently Wile E. went vegan after years of coming up short with Road Runner. Good for him, it takes a big person to accept change.”

“How in the hell did it even get inside,” one shared.

One commented: “I’m not sure using a broom is the best way to catch a coyote.”

“They’re evolving the food acquisition skills. They now know how to shop,” another social media user added.

One revealed: “I thought rat and saw coyote.”

“That’s wild. I live in rural Michigan, and I hear coyotes all the time at night. But I very, very rarely ever seen one,” one added.

Another said: “I was going with a possum or a raccoon. I was wrong.”

Thankfully, the coyote appeared uninjured in the clip. It was taken to Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation for assessment where vets will decide if it can be released.

While coyotes are generally not a threat to humans, it’s always best to avoid interaction and for people to secure food sources to minimise encounters,” an animal control spokesperson told NBC Chicago.

It’s not yet known exactly how the coyote managed to get into the supermarket.
