Australians shocked at the price of a Cadbury Easter bunny

Shoppers are losing their minds, declaring “inflation is officially out of control” after realising the price of an iconic Easter treat.

‘Never-before-seen’ Cadbury item lands in Aus

Aussie shoppers are losing their minds and declaring “inflation is officially out of control” after realising the price of an iconic Easter treat.

Inside a local supermarket, a stack of 250-gram Cadbury chocolate bunnies for Easter were priced at $10 a pop.

A customer who noticed the price of the chocolates and snapped an image took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to declare: “If I had kids they’d be about to learn the truth about the Easter bunny …$10 is outrageous.”

The post sparked plenty of reaction on social media, with many taking aim at the price per kilo cost.

“I just noticed shopping today the price is now [per] 100g and not kg. These are 40 bucks a kilo!” one wrote.

Another said: “$40 per kilo! Not just outrageous, that’s theft.”

One shopper who weighed in on the price of the bunnies advised fellow customers to wait until supermarkets drop the price.

“They always go on sale. Just got to be patient and hopefully have a big enough/second fridge to stash it,” they said.

One simply wrote: “The prices are ridiculous!”

Others recalled a time when Easter chocolates were much cheaper than they are now.

“I remember when these were only a $1. I’m struggling as it is, imagine if you’re a family on a single income,” one wrote.

“The 150g variety was $4.50 in 2019 and is now $7,” another claimed.

One shopper added: “These used to be $4.50. I’d buy three for my kids every year. They are older now and don’t like Easter type chocolate so I just buy them their day chocolate instead. I bet these won’t be all sold.”

“Inflation is officially out of control,” another declared.

However a Cadbury spokesperson revealed that the wildly popular item remains the same price as it was in 2023.

“Cadbury has been at the heart of Easter for over 100 years delivering the highest quality and great tasting Cadbury chocolate,” the Cadbury spokesperson told news.com.au.

“The shape, size and pricing of our Cadbury Dairy Milk range vary depending on the eat experience and product type. Cadbury can confirm our 250g bunny referenced in the X post has remained the same price since last year ($10).”

Supermarket giant Woolworths currently has the chocolate on special for $8 – the same price it was in 2022. Coles has also reduced the chocolate to $7.

The price of cocoa on the rise

The cost of cocoa rose by 44 per cent in the past 12 months – and in November, surged to its highest level in 44 years.

According to experts, rising global demand is driving the spike, as is the El Nino weather phenomenon in major cacao-growing countries like West Africa, where much of the world’s cocoa crop is produced.

The price of sugar, meanwhile, has jumped 40 per cent since last year.

However, on Wednesday Coles announced that all Easter chocolate and sweets at their supermarkets would be 25 per cent off until March 5.

The discount applies to brands such as Lindt, Cadbury, Red Tulip, Darrell Lea and Kinder.

Online shoppers can also snag a $20 discount when they spend $80 or more on Cadbury Easter products for one week from today, with customers able to combine it with the 25 per cent offer.
