An iconic Australian biscuit is more expensive to buy Down Under than it is from a UK supermarket.

Coles and Woolworths typically sell a 200g pack of Arnott’s Tim Tam Original for $6, though the latter supermarket currently has the product on special for $4.50.

But a picture shared to Reddit showed that at Waitrose, an upmarket UK supermarket, shoppers could pick Tim Tam Original and Chewy Caramel up for £2 on special — the equivalent of $3.85 here.

Even when it’s full-price at Waitrose, the pack of TimTams sell for £2.50, which is $4.80.

Shopper Adam, who goes by the Price Check Guy online, also spotted the difference and compared the price between Tesco, another UK supermarket, and our Woolworths.

“They’re more expensive to buy in Australia than from Tesco. Maybe they’re made in Europe somewhere,” he asked.

“Nope, they are made in New South Wales.”

Social media users obviously had a huge reaction to the news.

“And they are still saying there is no price gauging (sic) and sadly we are still shopping in those supermarkets,” one said.

“I think it is time to wake up. Also just to add, it is so frustrating that discussions are all around these kind of goods. Nobody talking about how much we are paying for a bottle of milk or a loaf of bread.”

One pointed out: “Tim Tams are often $3.50 or 2 for $7 at Coles. Maybe not right now but seems to be a common sale.”

“Tim Tams are cheaper in Canada $3.79 cad ($4.06 aus),” another said.

One added: “$5.49 (NZD) for Tim Tams at Woolworths in New Zealand. And $4.09 at Pak n Save. Crazy!”

Another revealed: “It was cheaper for me (an Australian) to buy Vegemite from Morrisons in a small town in Scotland than it is to currently buy from Coles/Woolies at home.”

“Tim Tams being $6 is a crime,” another social media user commented.

One said: “My friend bought Australian bananas in Italy for €1/kg ($1.50AU) last summer and was shocked to see them at colesworth for $5 when he arrived!”

“Australia’s favourite chocolate biscuit, Tim Tam, is proudly made here in Australia,” an Arnott’s spokesperson told news.com.au.

“We invest in promotional programs to ensure consumers can buy them at great value prices year-round.”

“The average price paid by Australian consumers in the past 12 months was $3.15 for Tim Tam Original 200g.”

News.com.au understands that there are a variety of details that go into selling an item overseas.
