A little-known, thrifty brand has stolen the hearts – and tastebuds – of Australians from under Cadbury’s nose.

The $3 Choceur chocolate range, which can be found at Aldi stores around the country, has taken the top spot in consumer group Canstar’s Most Satisfied Customer Awards. Lindt came in at second place, with Cadbury at third spot and Darrell Lea fourth. Nestle secured the fifth spot and Coles ranked at sixth position.

Made from European ingredients, the discount Choceur range includes flavours such coffee and cream, milk and white chocolate, salted pretzel, dark almond and caramel-filled white chocolate. There are also mini chocolate blocks available in hazelnut, white chocolate, and marzipan and white crisp.

Canstar surveyed 1000 customers in their bid to find the best of the bunch for their first ever review of chocolate blocks. Choceur scored five stars for most categories including taste, value for money, packaging design and overall satisfaction, and was rated four stars for variety.

Adam Millauro, who holds the enviable position of Australia Chocolate Buying Director at Aldi, said of the win: “Our chocolate is specially crafted in Europe and offers ALDI customers the best quality at the lowest price possible.

“This range also uses certified sustainably sourced cocoa, which supports fair working conditions and better opportunities for cocoa farmers, their families and our planet.”

Twitter user Jacqueline is one of the many fans of the brand, posting: “We changed over to Aldi’s Choceur chocolates about 3 years ago. No more oils and defatted milk fillers for us or fake vanilla. Whole milk, real chocolate products make the bars less like plastic and more edible and delectable. And weirdly less expensive.”

Another user Gezza agreed:

However, there are still plenty of fans of the other chockie brands.

According to the Canstar survey, the majority (56 per cent) prefer to keep it simple with a block of milk chocolate, while a third (34 per cent) said dark chocolate was their favourite, and just 9 per cent ranked white chocolate as the best.
