Aussies lose it over 'special' buffet detail

A cult Aussie restaurant has launched a festive version of its famous buffet – with a “special” detail that has diners in a spin.

Crown Resorts in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth recently began offering the “Festive Buffet Meal”, a Christmas-themed twist on its hugely popular all-you-can-eat service.

While the restaurants, named the Epicurean in Sydney and Perth and the Conservatory in Melbourne, are serving up its usual smorgasbord of cuisines and dishes alongside an array of Christmas decorations and activations – diners are raving about one jaw-dropping feature: the oyster tower.

“The oyster tower is a really special experience,” one diner, who had the $155 Christmas buffet in Sydney said on YouTube.

“I’ve never had all you can eat oysters. It’s like, woah.”

“Christmas lunch at Epicurean is just wow,” another shared on TikTok.

Videos show the iconic buffet display filled with festive decorations, including a moving train and a giant snow globe.

Alongside the signature oyster mountain – which is there all year round – diners can also enjoy a huge array of seafood, including lobsters, Queensland tiger prawns, muscles and clams, spanner crabs and cured mackerels.

There’s also a huge selection of global cuisines including Japanese, Chinese, Indian and Italian as well as an impressive dessert section that features a chocolate fountain.

The hotel chain said it is “embracing the spirit of giving” at Christmas by supporting The Salvation Army and its 100,000 Meals initiative this December, which provides food to those in need during the silly season.

This will see Crown donate $10 from every Festive Buffet Meal and its Christmas High Tea as well as providing tap-and-donate terminals throughout its resort properties where guests can instantly donate $10. This one-off additional donation will be matched by Crown.

“Crown has supported The Salvos for 16 years, and we are incredibly proud to be supporting their ‘100,000 Meals’ initiative this year,” Crown Resorts CEO, Ciarán Carruthers, said. “Christmas can be a very challenging time for many, so we’re honoured to help create a festive season that truly benefits communities in need and reminds us just how good it feels to give back.”

It’s not just the buffet, dubbed “Australia’s best” by diners previously, that has set social media alight – with the hotel chain’s festive display garnering attention.

The three Crown properties are all “brimming with festive-themed experiences” that include, entertainment and decorations, while a new Christmas-themed laser light show and neon installation has popped up for the first time along Crown Melbourne’s Riverwalk.

Guests and tourists can also enjoy Santa photos, a Christmas show with dancers and Christmas characters, as well as carolling performances.
