Arnott’s reveals the truth about one of its favourite biscuits
It turns out not all Arnott’s biscuits are equal but you wouldn’t know it unless you toured Australia trying this classic biscuit in every state.
Arnott’s has revealed a little known fact about one of its iconic biscuits.
It may just blow your mind.
Turns out Ginger Nut biscuits are different depending on which Australian state you eat them in.
Social media users have been on to it for a while, labelling it the “2020 conspiracy”.
But the renowned Aussie biscuit maker was happy to confirm to news.com.au that in does in fact have four different recipes in use across the different states and territories.
It means the taste, texture and colour is completely different.

“The Ginger Nut started long ago, back in the 1960s, when we used to have different bakeries in different states each making a Ginger Nut biscuit that their locals loved,” an Arnott’s spokesperson told news.com.au
“When Arnott’s became a national company we looked at the possibility of selling one Ginger Nut nationally.
“However, Aussies in each state made it clear they loved their homegrown variety, and there’s just no substitute for their Ginger Nut, the version they had grown up and loved.”
All Ginger Nut biscuits weigh 250g, but when it comes to the look, feel and taste, there’s obvious differences from state to state.
WA, SA and the NT share the same “sweet” recipe, while those living in Vic and Tasmania enjoy an even sweeter flavour closest to traditional Ginger Nuts from overseas, which are bigger and softer in texture.
NSW and the ACT share the same “thick and hard” recipe, while those living in QLD get to indulge in their own “thin, sweet and dark” recipe.
What also changes is how long each biscuit is baked and how much of each ingredient goes into different bakes.
The news.com.au office put the four flavours to the test. In the end two states had divided the newsroom.
“The lightest one (NSW) is definitely the best, it’s sweeter and a bit chewy. YUM.”
The claim was backed by another NSW supporter who said while she was shocked to learn each state had its own version, “for the record, NSW is still the best”.
“It’s thick, it’s crunchy and it’s not too spicy. Ginger Nut is famed for being rock hard, so NSW does this best. Victoria is slightly sweeter and thinner and actually has the longest packet, as well as SA/WA. Queensland has the spiciest version.”
But one staffer described the state’s thick and hard biscuit like it “was going to chip a tooth”.
“QLD ones were how a biscuit is supposed to be (clearly I’m a QLD boy through and through).”
And his verdict was backed by another QLD fan who said the state “nailed the Ginger Nut goodness brief”.
“The ginger-biscuit dough ratio was spot on with just enough ginger to tickle your tastebuds and it’s not too tough on the ol’ pearlers, unlike the NSW biscuit. I’d say the Queensland Ginger Nut bikkie is the perfect tea-dunker.”
Social media users were also shocked to discover the difference in recipes.
“I’ve been living a lie all my life. Why do this to me Arnotts???” a Reddit user said.
“I actually got relatives and friends of friends to mail all the different varieties to me, then sat down and did a taste test. Can confirm they’re all very different,” another added, while a third labelled it a “true 2020 conspiracy”.
But another responded saying, “I can verify. I have collected Gingernuts from Vic, NSW, ACT and the NT and they are definitely different. NSW/ACT ones are by far the best. Super hard, less sweet and perfect for dipping in tea without falling apart.”
