It is no secret that Australians are coffee snobs — but one brew from a discount supermarket has taken out the top spot at a prestigious awards.

Aldi Australia’s Lazzio coffee beans just won gold at the 2024 World Series of the Gold Coffee Bean Awards, earning the official title of the “world’s best” coffee.

The supermarket was also crowned Overall Large Chain Champion.

The Golden Bean is the world’s largest coffee roasting competition, with the World Series being a grand final between the northern and southern hemispheres. This year’s competition had more than 2500 submissions.

Aldi won the competition between 2019 and 2022 but missed out in 2023. But this year’s competition was the first World Series win for Aldi’s Lazzio coffee, which is roasted in Melbourne by Black Bag Roasters.

“As a nation obsessed with its coffee, we’re proud to partner with Black Bag Roasters to bring locally roasted, award-winning, world-class coffee to our customers,” Daniel Quinlan, Aldi Australia’s coffee buying director, said.

“Adding to our golden trophies with this World Series win is another nod to the quality we work hard to deliver to our customers by working closely with the best supplier partners. With prices starting at just 10 cents a cup, Lazzio is a luxury everyone can afford.

There are 11 types of blends in the Lazzio range available at Aldi, ranging in price and sizes from the Lazzio Organic Ground Coffee Honduras 250g and the Organic Ground Coffee Peru 250g, both are available for just $4.99.

There are also one kilogram bags, such as the Lazzio Single Origin Columbia Beans and the Single Origin Brazil Beans. The one kilogram bags range from $11.99 to $21.99.

The newest addition to the range is the Lazzio Luxe beans.

Lance Brown, the director of Black Bag Roasters, said: “We are always excited to be recognised for our range of coffee beans, but it is especially humbling to receive such high praise at the World Series of the Golden Bean Awards.

“Our nine-year partnership with ALDI continues to take us to new heights, and we couldn’t be more pleased with this result.”
