A MOTHER made a stomach-turning discovery after her son ate a piece of Woolworths BBQ chicken she had just purchased to find that it was infested with maggots.

Rejane Ga Silva bought the chicken from Woolworths in Revesby, NSW on Saturday, as she has done many times before.

“We often buy the Woolworths BBQ chicken — basically once a week,” she told 7 News.

“It makes things easier like if we’re busy with work — we’ve never had a problem but I don’t know if I’ll buy it again now.”

She was pulling it apart for her daughter Sophia, 7, and stepson Palo, 15, when her son picked up a piece and ate it. Only after he had already eaten the chicken did Ms Ga Silva notice the tiny larvae wriggling over the chicken and kitchen bench.

“I saw some things moving inside and I was just disgusted, I don’t know how else to describe it,” she said.

As well as being appalled by the sight of maggots crawling all over her food, Ms Ga Silva is also worried about the health risks to her son.

“I don’t know if he is going to get sick now,” she said. “I have to take him to hospital or the doctors now and see if he will have a reaction.”

Woolworths informed news.com.au that Ms Ga Silva has been provided a full refund and said if any customer has a complaint they should contact Woolworths directly.

“We take customer concerns and feedback on our products seriously. We encourage all customers with concerns to contact the store of purchase directly or our customer hub on 1300 767 969,” said a Woolworths spokesman.

This isn’t the first time a Woolworths customer has had a shock after finding an unwelcome guest crawling around inside their food purchase.

Just this month, a Melbourne woman got a nasty surprise when she discovered an eight-legged addition to the Woolworth’s pre-packaged salad she was eating.

Brooke Wiramanaden said she felt “physically sick” when she spotted the spider sitting in her lunch. “I was eating my lunch at work and I had pretty much eaten the whole thing when I noticed it,” she said.

“I got two packets [of pre packed salad] but I threw everything out as it made me sick to my stomach,” Ms Wiramanaden told news.com.au.

The incident comes at a bad time for the supermarket giant, which could be facing massive strikes in distribution centres across Victoria and NSW, with 2000 staff pushing for pay rises and job security.

Last week, the National Union of Workers lodged applications to lawfully take industrial action in four of Woolworths distribution centres.

A Woolworths spokesman said the company is in negotiations with staff, with workers set to vote on whether or not they go on strike.

“We will continue to work with our team members and their chosen representatives to get the right outcome at each of our sites,” he said.

“Our number one priority will remain our team members and the service to our customers.”
