Should prices of essential groceries be frozen?

Australian sweet lovers are going crazy over an $8 item from German supermarket chain Aldi, with many comparing to a British treat.

Katja Biggetjes have been introduced at Aldi as part of the Special Buys Dutch Week, with the lolly having a $7.99 price tag.

However, many shoppers are comparing them to a British candy called Percy Pig.

“These are my favourite. I always stock up with several bags then get sad when I eat them all like the pig I am and wish I got more,” one social media user commented.

Another commented: “Just like the M&S Percy Pigs.”

One added: “I loveeeee these! Last year I bought six or so packets to last the year.”

“dammit. I used to love these lollies. Why is life TESTING me,” another commiserated.

Meanwhile, one tagged their friend and said: “These look like the Percy pigs you gave us from the UK!”

An Aldi spokesperson told news.com.au that the snack has proved popular time and time again.

“We are always delighted when customers get excited for one of our Special Buys products,” an Aldi spokesperson told news.com.au.

“For those not yet in the know, Katja Biggetjes are soft Dutch lollies made from real fruit juice, natural colours, and are vegan and gluten-free, making them the perfect treat. Flavoured with strawberry, raspberry and cherry, these delicious little piggies are available right now as part of the Dutch Delights Special Buys range for $7.99.

“They won’t be around for long though, so grab them before these little piggies are all snatched up.”

It comes after Courtney Oliver went viral for revealing she’s fed-up with seeing customers be rude to staff “every time” she goes to the supermarket.

Ms Oliver, based in Perth, amassed more than 200,000 views on TikTok when she revealed she couldn’t even pop into the supermarket, such as Woolworths, Coles or Aldi, to get a snack without hearing people complain.

“Every time I go, someone — I don’t want to say someone older, because sometimes they are younger — but always someone is going, ‘I don’t want to use self-serve, why is there no cash check-outs available?’ Blah blah blah,” she said.

She said customers’ attitudes frustrated her because workers weren’t responsible for making big decisions about how supermarkets ran.

“Do you think it is their fault?” she asked.

She said while she was lining up to use a checkout that was accepting cash recently, a woman behind her complained there weren’t enough available.

The woman even pointed at a supermarket employee and said, “They’re trying to take our cash”, she said.

Ms Oliver said supermarket staff members didn’t get “paid enough” to deal with being harassed by customers.

“If you truly believe the person serving you controls the self-serve check-outs. If you believe it is them, that they have personally made a decision that inconveniences you, you’ve got rocks in your head,” she declared.
