Melbourne cafe stuns with ‘outrageous’ menu addition
A sign at a Melbourne cafe has turned heads with an option for a $5 milk alternative, but it’s not quite what it seems.
A Melbourne cafe is turning heads with a sign suggesting it offers a bizarre addition to their menu – a rather unique alternative milk for customers’ caffiene fix.
Sergy Boy, a trendy cafe on Collins Street in Docklands, had a sign on its counter last week offering “breast milk”, according to a cafe-goer who spotted it.
“I saw it when I was going to get my coffee one morning this week,” the man told news.com.au.
“I’m not usually in Melbourne but was down from Sydney on a work trip.”
The man said he was looking for a quick and convenient place for his daily brew and noticed the buzzing cafe with hoards of people outside.
“When I went over to the counter to order, there was this blackboard that had all the alternative milks available on it,” he explained.
In a photo shared by the Sydneysider, a small black sign sits atop a glass bench near where the baristas hand people their coffees.
“Now serving: Almond milk, oat milk, lactose free milk. Next week, breast milk,” it read.
The cheeky addition to the menu was priced at $5, which seems steep when you consider that’s on top of the price of the coffee itself and almond milk was only 50 cents extra.
When the man inquired about the sign, the staff were apparently confused as they thought he might actually be trying to order the breast milk with his coffee.
He clarified that he was not, and then a barista confirmed to him that the sign was “just a joke”.
“It’s probably a response to all the interesting milk requests they get each week,” the man theorised.
“But honestly, it did make me do a double take. I know Melbourne is known for being hipster and forward-thinking so I wouldn’t put it past them!”
It turns out others have also spotted the sign, taking to social media to get in on the joke.
“Finally, a Melbourne cafe with all your milk needs,” someone wrote to the r/melbourne Reddit, sharing a snap of the blackboard.
“Wait breast milk is going for $5? There’s a market for this?” one intrigued user asked.
“This could be a side hustle … young mums making extra cash.”
“I’m sure it would be udder-ly amazing,” quipped another.
“I predict a change in demographics for that cafe next week,” a fourth person said, implying they might see more male clientele going forward.
However not everyone was so lighthearted about the issue.
“You should never joke about this,” one man wrote.
Meanwhile, others debated whether or not breast milk should even be placed among the other ‘alternative milks’ on the sign because it is technically dairy.
According to Healthline, breast milk is considered a dairy item as dairy refers to products that are made from the milk of mammals, and humans are mammals.
Someone then argued that it should be considered ‘vegan’ if it comes from “consenting” women.
