Canadian woman ‘confused’ by Australian coffee names

A Canadian woman travelling through Australia has said she “goes around in circles” with baristas when ordering this coffee drink.

Canadian expat’s Aussie coffee snub

A Canadian woman has shared her frustration at ordering coffee since moving to Australia, revealing she didn’t realise her choice in hot drink had a different name Down Under that leaves her and the barista “going in circles”.

Kaleigh Marielle arrived in Australia in March 2020 just before the pandemic hit and has been travelling around in a campervan since, documenting her adventures on TikTok.

Despite loving our beaches and animals, the 28-year-old recently revealed there’s one thing she can’t get used to – our coffee.

In a video detailing “ordering coffee in Australia as a Canadian”, Kaleigh explained she’s not a fan of common coffee drinks including a flat white, a short black or a long black, stating she wants a black coffee.

The vegan woman also stated her milk preference is tricky to get here, writing “also love a coconut milk latte but they are harder to find in Australia. It’s all about the oat, soy and almond milk here”.

Understandably, her video has prompted a flurry of comments, many from people explaining a long black is the same as a black coffee.

“It’s literally a long black or Americano, but in North America they wouldn’t call it that as it’s just their default coffee,” one person said.

“But … they are the same,” another wrote.

“Long black = black coffee,” someone else explained.

Kaleigh responded saying it is the same which is why she “has so much trouble here”.

“I always say ‘black coffee’ and then they say ‘long black’ and I say no and then we go in a circle,” she told one commenter.

“Because I order black coffee we both get confused every time,” she told another user. “I didn’t know what a long black was for the longest time.”

Others took issue with Kaleigh’s coffee of choice, claiming “no one drinks black coffee in Australia”.

As a result of her confusion, Kaleigh said she loves Starbucks for its “consistency”.

The Canadian woman isn’t the only expat who has been surprised by differences they have discovered living in Australia recently.

TikTok user Sophia, 29, originally from Los Angeles, moved to Sydney in February 2020 and recently shared a video detailing her shock at discovering how cold it gets here.

Far from being viewed as a tourist with a gripe, Sophia’s revelation has proved to be extremely relatable, with many stating it was a fact even “Aussies don’t like to admit”.

“I was shocked last year by how cold the winter got; no one warned me about it,” Sophia told news.com.au last week.

“The first winter in Sydney I invested in a $300 puffer coat and gloves. Then I bought a trench coat and more gloves.”

While Sophia explains she “loves” the NSW city and “would not want to live in any other state” – she said in her viral TikTok video she was “not aware” of just how chilly it gets.

“It’s 46 degrees Fahrenheit right now so that’s 7 degrees Celsius and I’m wearing puffer coats, layers on layers every single day,” Sophia stated in her video titled: “When you move from Los Angeles to Sydney.

“I’m wearing gloves, I’m the person to be wearing gloves in the group and everyone’s like, ‘What are you doing?’”

Reaction to the video has been strong, with many agreeing it is “freezing” here and no one talks about it.
