Coles has launched a new $12 ‘Mexican-inspired’ roast chook

The supermarket giant has expanded one of its “most popular” offerings with a new flavour that has been “months in the making”.

Coronavirus: Coles and Woolworths tighten social distancing rules

Coles has expanded its offering in one of its most drool-worthy sections – the hot items in the deli aisle.

The supermarket giant already sells freshly cooked roast chicken and joints of slow-cooked beef for time-poor customers, with the chooks being one of the most popular products shoppers buy.

But now a new addition to the rotisserie line-up has been spotted.

A new “Mexican-inspired” chook has hit the shelves – seasoned using paprika, chilli, oregano and cumin – and costs $12, which is $2 more than the regular barbecue variety.

It is also RSPCA approved.

“Hot roast chooks are among the most popular products our customers buy at Coles. They’re a delicious, great value meal solution for customers who are looking to save time and hassle on cooking from scratch,” Coles product developer Corinne Renshaw told news.com.au.

“The flavoured chook has been months in the making and is inspired by the growing popularity of Mexican food in Australia and globally.

“The new hot roast chicken uses responsibly sourced chicken and has a delicious Mexican-flavoured marinade, stuffing core and sprinkle.”

Ms Rensahw said as well as using traditional herb flavourings to give the meat a traditional zingy and spicy flavour, the chicken is also infused with a smoke flavouring in the marinade for an authentic and consistent flavour throughout the whole chook.

On Facebook, fans of Coles’ roast chicken have shared their excitement at the new flavour – with one labelling it “life-changing”.

As well as proving popular because of its great taste, shoppers love the retailer’s policy around availability of them too.

It states that if a hot chook isn’t ready to go in the heated cabinet then the company promises to hand over a free one next time you shop.

All a shopper has to do is notify staff there’s none available, and the company policy dictates a voucher must be given to use at another time.

“Sorry we’re out,” the Coles token reads.

“This voucher redeems one Coles hot roast chicken with our compliments.”

A Coles spokeswoman told news.com.au last year the policy, which was relaunched in March 2019, was in place at every store across Australia.

“We know customers love to get their hands on our delicious hot roast chickens, so for customers who aren’t able to purchase one at the time they want within the period specified in-store, we can provide them with a voucher for a free hot roast chicken,” she said.

Woolworths also sells hot cooked roast chickens which are equally as popular – with one woman revealing last year that she found a way to score them for free, by going into store just before closing time.
