Victoria Beckham's style pick spells DISASTER for the rest of us

CHECK out Victoria Beckham's style pick during New York Fashion Week. It looks OK on her but it spells DISASTER for the rest of us.

I LIKE Victoria Beckham. I really do.

I like what she has done with clothes; that she has designed hugely popular body-conscious dresses and sharp suits that look chic and elegant and understated and cool.

The fact the former Spice Girl-turned-acclaimed-designer can charge a fortune for them is a huge compliment to her career metamorphosis.

But I have to draw a big, dark line in the style sand over her choice of pants. To use a Red-Foo-ism, they are pretty Ridiculous.

Walking out onto her New York runway to take a bow after her successful spring-summer collection show last night, VB wore a simple and relaxed white shirt teamed with some really, really questionable pants.

Sure, just-below-the-knee wide culottes may hang brilliantly off the skin and bones that make up most models and the likes of a thin and gangly VB.

But put them on the bodies of the rest of us - like 99.9999 per cent of us - and we will look like latter day air hosties from an eastern bloc airline that has long since collapsed.

Simply, they're just not attractive.

But the bigger joke is that, like all fashion 'trends', we will all be wearing them in some form or another once the style hits the high street and fast fashion chains in a matter of months. No matter how ugly.

This is where fashion can be one big mad con that so many of us get sucked into, no matter how good or bad the hot 'trend' happens to be. We hated clumpy platform heels, puffball skirts and iridescent green, but hey, we nearly all wore them!

Yep, fashion is one mad, fickle and wild beast that throws whatever it wishes upon us, demanding just one thing in return - that we hand over our bucks for the privilege.

So, when you do hand over your bucks in a few months - or next year - when the VB shape of pants hit H&M and Zara and Witchery and Topshop and Sportsgirl, remember one thing: You can buy fashion but you can never, ever buy style.
