TENNIS champ Bjorn Borg is set to open Sydney TAFE’s Fashion Design Studio Innovators parade this year at Fashion Week Australia.

The unlikely catwalk star makes a cameo in graduate Catherine Conlan’s collection, which will be first among the six chosen student collections to appear on the runway in the annual parade on April 15.

The Swedish sports star features on a dress in Conlan’s first collection titled All the time /Bjorn Again.

“It’s fun and I think the industry will get that,” the school’s head Nicholas Huxley said. “Her collection’s quite simple and very wearable.”

Huxley, who has mentored the country’s top design talent including Dion Lee and Christoper Esber, said while each had exceptional design talent, he predicted Mat Lee would catch the eye of critics.

“He’s like a mad scientist, he’s very, very brilliant and the thing about that is he’s eventually going to hone his craft down to a commercial viability but at the same time he’s having a lot of fun and experimenting.”

Women’s wear designer Onticha Sawasdee was proving the most astute among the group.

“She’s already very commercial wise about selling,” he said.

The newcomers will join seasoned designers including Manning Cartell, Bianca Spender, Kate Sylvester and Alice McCall at the 20th annual Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia which begins on April 12.
