Style Snippets: Australia supports French ban on anorexic models; Fernanda Ly to miss MBFWA; Tome picks top women for front row
LOCAL model Fernanda Ly is so busy in New York she won’t be back for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia.
FRANCE wants to ban anorexic models and back home industry insiders support the move.
Lara Inc Events founder and casting agent, Lara Karamian says unhealthy shapes don’t sell clothes.
“If you look at the Australian market our best selling sizes are over 12. We want the right body shape in designers garments to help sell the clothes,” she said.
Karamian produces dozens of parades each season and in the lead-up to MBFWA, will decide who walks the runway.
“I’ve seen a lot of girls so far and they are looking healthy and in proportion,” she said. “But some are very tall, so naturally they are going to look skinny.”
AUSSIE STAR FERNANDA LY TO MISS MBFWA
LOCAL model Fernanda Ly is so busy in New York she won’t be back for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia.
Since the pink-haired teenager walked for Louis Vuitton earlier this month, she has become one of the hottest names — and Instagram stars — on the scene. Most recently she worked with Juergen Teller on the luxury brand’s winter lookbook and is now settling into life in the Big Apple.
“All the people I’ve met so far have been so welcoming. I’ve made friends here in New York. Not seeing everyone is okay because we always Skype,” Ly said.
Priscilla’s Model Management spokeswoman Doll Wright said it’s not often Vuitton’s creative director Nicolas Ghesquiere books a girl on the spot.
“When she flew to meet Nicolas she was booked immediately. It’s not about being a blank canvas anymore, designers want energy and originality,” said.
Another rising star this season is 18-year-old Wenona boarder, Lara Carter. The Dubbo-raised teenager walked for both Prada and Louis Vuitton in Europe last month and will appear at Carriageworks next month.
TOME TO SET TONE FOR FRONT ROW
FOR their debut show at MBFWA, New York-based Tome designers Ryan Lobo and Ramon Martin will be asking Cate Blanchett, Fiona Hall and Germaine Greer to sit front row.
“We would love to have some inspirational women join us,” said Martin.
The Aussie design duo who were finalists in the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund two years ago, will preview their pre-fall collection on Monday, April 13.
“We feel it is a collection that is well suited to our Australian customer,” he said.
REAL LIFE STYLE
IF you’re a fan of the normcore trend, take note.
Glamazon, Alexandra Agoston has styled her favourite ’90s look into River Island’s latest campaign.
“They wanted me to style the looks based on my off-duty style. And I included menswear in the shoot,” the 27-year-old said.
We love the double denim look worn with white sneakers and dark shades.
The photo shoot took place during Paris Fashion week.
“We shot it between shows. I got to select my favourite pieces and style looks,” she said.
Depending on her schedule in New York, Agoston hopes to be back for fashion week.
