Adorable story behind Meghan’s disappearing necklace

EVERY element of Meghan Markle’s attire is planned ahead of time. But the necklace she wore on Thursday was a last-minute addition.

LITTLE Gavin wanted only one thing on Thursday.

To say hello to a real life princess and give her the gift he’d spent all morning making.

Wedged against the barriers along Government House Drive in Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens, he got his wish.

Armed with a handmade sign for the Duchess of Sussex and a bit of courage, Gavin handed over the ribbon and gold-painted pasta accessory and Meghan Markle put it right on.

News.com.au spoke with Gavin and his mum, Rowan, before the royals arrived.

His mum said the primary school student “woke up with a cough” this morning and insisted he absolutely must have the day off. Then he got right to creating his masterpiece. Or pastapiece, as it were.

“Who’s this all for?” we asked him.

“The princess and the prince,” Gavin said.

And here is the moment Meghan put the homemade necklace around her neck, again proving how great she is with her fans.

Dressed in a pilot’s outfit, little Gavin explained how he made it.

“I made it with pasta and dipped them in gold paint and threaded the string through.”

That simple. His handmade sign was enough to draw the attention of the fashion icon who threw it straight around her neck.

The pasta necklace was the perfect complement to the Duchess’s navy Dion Lee dress and Martin Grant trench coat. She also wore $877 Manolo Blahnik BB pumps and a gold cuff bracelet by British designer Shaun Lane.

Meghan wore the necklace as she greeted hundreds of fans on the first stop of the royal couple’s Melbourne tour. After a reception at Government House, the pair will travel to Fitzroy to visit a Mission Australia social enterprise restaurant.

They’ll finish the day with a visit to students at Albert Park Primary School and by helping clean up rubbish at Port Melbourne Beach.
