Jibes about Jessica Gomes's weight are 'tragic'

OPINION: Guests who were overheard snarking about model Jessica Gomes's weight at a fashion show this week need to get a life.

Jessica Gomes looked amazing in this Jets swimsuit at the David Jones Spring/Summer fashion launch.

THIS week's David Jones Spring Summer launch was a shining moment for new face Jessica Gomes.

The 27-year-old Australian model was a beautiful breath of fresh air for the brand which parted ways with Miranda Kerr earlier this year.

Gomes looked radiant as she sashayed down the white runway in a black Jets swimsuit prompting many in the audience to commend the model's healthy look.

But not everyone was so kind. Some guests were overheard making jibes about, of all things, her weight.

"You'd think she would have gone to the gym before the show," said one male attendee. "Can you see her stretch marks?" asked another.

Why, amidst all the talk of monochrome pant suits and animal-inspired kaftans, fashion folk still find it necessary to comment on a perfectly healthy model's weight is baffling.

"It's just tragic," said Jennifer Beveridge, CEO of Eating Disorders Victoria. "At what point does the idea of perfection end? We are so much more than our bodies.

"This kind of criticism affects us all because rather than feeling good about ourselves, we become hyper critical of the way we look. These people become the critical voices in our own heads."

Thankfully most people were incredibly supportive of Gomes with fashion fans calling her "beyond divine" and a "true beauty" on Twitter.

A sentiment echoed by Vogue magazine editor Edwina McCann. "I thought she looked fabulous and healthy," McCann said. "Our online audience and Facebook friends have been overwhelming with their support of Jess as the new face of DJs."
