Rumours have been swirling for months about where the Swedish retailer would open in Australia after H&M confirmed in March that it would be coming Down Under.
The Melbourne shop, to open in March 2014, will be H&M's Australian flagship store. It will be one of the biggest H&Ms in the world, taking over three floors of the heritage-listed GPO building.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by ISPT, which operates the GPO.
H&M is famous for affordable high-street style, as well as for its designer collaborations with the likes of Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney and Versace. It has even done a swimwear line with Kylie Minogue.
H&M first opened in Sweden in 1947 and has grown to over 2800 stories worldwide.
