TikToker sparks frenzy over ‘budget’ Kmart puffer jacket

A Melbourne TikToker has sparked a frenzy over a $40 Kmart puffer jacket that’s the “perfect dupe” of a $400 version.

As temperatures plummet across Australia, those of us who aren’t jetting off to Europe to escape the cold are scrambling to get our hands on as many winter essentials as possible.

And one TikToker has sparked a frenzy with her budget find, posting a video of herself in a beige puffer jacket from Kmart.

Melbourne woman Georgia Clay shared the stylish outerwear with her 40.2k followers on the platform, with many remarking the $40 piece was a perfect dupe for the likes of those from the North Face, at just 10 per cent of the cost.

The style – which launched in April as part of the retailer’s Autumn/Winter collection – “has quickly become a popular choice among customers”, a Kmart spokeswoman told news.com.au.

“The highlight colours of the season – bright blue and beige – [have been] a particular favourite among shoppers,” she added.

“The puffer can easily be styled up or down.

“For those who don’t want to compromise on comfort this winter, pair your puffer with a matching leisure set to look put together with ease, or for a classic winter casual look, pair back with denim, over knitwear to help keep cosy on the go.”

Dozens of Georgia’s followers took to the video’s comments to declare that they “need this puffer”, with one writing, “OK but how cute is this colour???”

“Kmart bringing all the goods,” one said, while another wrote, “Wait this is so cute I wanna buy.”

“Damn I spent $400 on the North Face puffer when I could of got this!” commented another.

But more than a few of the commenters complained that whenever they go to Kmart “they don’t have this” – with the popular style selling out in certain sizes online and in store.

“As these puffers are a seasonal style, numbers are limited,” the Kmart spokeswoman said.

“However, we encourage customers to keep an eye out as stock continues to flow through select stores.”

Australia’s obsession with a good puffer jacket is well-documented – former professional footballer and British expat Daniel Olaniran recently took to social media to mock Sydneysiders for bundling up in their North Face and Kathmandu outerwear as soon as the mercury dipped.

“Australians in the winter man, you lot are funny man,” Olaniran, who has lived here for more than two years, said in a video.

“You guys can’t wait to bring out the North Face jackets … I’m seeing big puffy North Face jackets looking Arsène Wenger, you know what I mean.”

He said he’d noticed the amount of Aussies in “North Face drip from head to toe, including the hat and gloves, like what is this man”.

“It’s not even that cold man, all you need is a light jumper and you’re ready to roll bruv.”
