Socks and sandals become an unexpected trend after Melbourne Fashion Festival

IT WAS once such a fashion atrocity that only daggy dads could pull it off, now it’s all the rage. What is it?

LONG considered a fashion faux pas, pairing socks and sandals is set to become a winter must.

The questionable trend sees lightweight and thick socks teamed with everything from strappy, platform heels to chunky, flat sandals.

The look was hugely popular during last week’s Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival, and festival chief executive Graeme Lewsey says he expects it to step off the catwalk and into wardrobes.

“It’s providing the silhouette of a heavier shoe but still being able to keep to a lighter-weight sandal or heel,” he said.

“It’s about having fun with it and exploring new looks.”

Australian labels Wild Horses, Livia Areana, Jolet and Gorman all embraced the trend when showing off their collections at the festival, even making the socks the statement by mixing teal and maroon socks with black footwear.

But the look is not for everyone, Mr Lewsey says.

“To pull it off, you certainly have to be someone who wants to be really on trend and fashion-forward,” he says.

For those who fit that category, the quirky style works best with dresses and skirts that sit no longer than just below the knee.
