Mid-sized creators are changing the fashion game

There’s a huge new trend taking off online and it is firm proof that you don’t need to be “skinny” to be a fashionable.

A fashion trend taking off on social media proves we aren’t returning to the toxic skinny culture that ruled the 90s.

Sure, we might be able to see Kim Kardashian shrinking before our eyes, but not all hope is lost because the women who seem to be ruling the fashion world online are midsized creators.

So, what is a mid-sized creator?

Well, it’s a debatable term. Basically, it is just a woman above a size eight who wouldn’t be considered the right size to become a catwalk model.

There’s a bit of tension around what makes a woman mid-sized. Some people online seem to think you can only call yourself mid-sized if you wear a certain size in jeans, usually size 10 to say, 14 or 16.

The real answer, though, is a bit more simple - if you don’t fit into the Bella Hadid body type camp, well, you might consider yourself a mid-sized girl.

There’s no such thing as a normal body because every body is normal, but mid-sized creators want to normalise their bodies in fashion, reasoning that while we see a lot of super-thin, and an increasing amount of curve models, there’s not a lot of representation for everyone in between.

A popular trend in the mid-sized world is for a creator to recreate a look they’ve seen on famous celebs and show what it looks like on a different body type.

Creator Casee Brim has gone viral multiple times for recreating iconic looks by Hailey Bieber and showing how it looks on her self-proclaimed “mid-sized” body.

It has become so popular that she’s turned it into a successful series on TikTok and has amassed hundreds of thousands of views.

“Finally, someone with my body type,” someone praised.

“Killed it!” another complimented.

“Love this! More mid-sized inspiration,” someone begged.

It’s all about making it clear that fashion isn’t just reserved for one body type and styles like low-rise jeans, crop tops, and oversized jumpers can work on any body shape and look chic and cool.

Plenty of mid-sized creators create content on TikTok to remind women they don’t need to be a specific size or weight to wander around dressed like a runway model.

Creator Megan went viral after she shared a video with the message, “When you stop waiting to lose weight to dress cute.”

The TikTok got over a million views, and plenty of women shared how much that simple but impactful message meant to them.

“100 per cent honestly, mid-size TikTok saved my life and my outlook on it.” Someone wrote.

“I just started this, and it feels good,” another cheered.

“Thank you for posting this. You’re beautiful, and this inspires me to be more confident with outfit choices regardless of my size,” someone praised.

It also doesn’t just stop at outerwear. Plenty of mid-sized creators share their swimsuit looks and encourage women to wear bikinis and embrace their natural bodies.

Sometimes, it is as simple as mid-sized creators sharing their bikini recommendations or trying different types of bikinis on and pointing out that it is a perfectly normal experience to find it hard for a swimsuit to fit you correctly.

Creator Jenny posted a video of herself walking around in a bikini and amassed mass attention for her empowering caption.

“Here’s your sign to wear the damn bikini at the beach,” she wrote.

The comment section was flooded with women sending her praise.

“As you should,” one wrote.

“You ate this up,” another praised.

“Stunning,” someone complimented.

The mid-sized trend might seem obvious, but psychologist Carly Dober said that seeing women with different body shapes embracing fashion is really “important,” and helps other women with their body issues.

“It’s so important for women to see themselves represented and accepted on social media. Seeing diverse bodies and representation of this absolutely impacts body image positively,” she told news.com.au.

Dober also explained that the mid-sized trend is the perfect antidote to diet culture and makes women feel like they need to be their smallest to look their best.

“We know that unattainable beauty standards and body shapes place unnecessary and harmful pressure on people. To see bodies that do not represent this is an embrace of health, and what we see in the offline world.”
