Kim Kardashian hits Paris in double denim with Serena Williams to check on her wedding dress
THERE are few trends harder to pull off than chambray, except maybe double chambray, but trendsetter Kim persists, which begs the question, should you get a Canadian tuxedo, too?
THERE are few trends harder to pull off than chambray, except maybe double chambray, but trendsetter Kim Kardashian persists with the double denim look which begs the question, is it coming back?
According to Sunday Style editor Kerrie McCallum it never left. “I’m a fan of double denim, and it’s been a trend for a while,” she says. “They key is wearing denim in the same tone – it says laid-back cool.”
But when have we ever known the Kardashian clan to do laid-back anything?
“She has put a lot of effort into her hair and makeup and accessories so it doesn’t really fit the laid-back hipster vibe of double denim,” admits McCallum, “but that colour suits Kim and it’s actually a pretty restrained look for her.”
News.com.au’s style commentator Melissa Hoyer agrees. “Double denim isn’t a new trend so it surprised me that she is still deciding to rock it. If anything KK tries to set some kind of style agenda not mimic an existing one. The really, really, really tight jeans don’t flow with the same blue denim shade in the shirt, but then I have been known to once wear triple denim, so what would I know?”
This is not the first time the reality TV star has stepped out in the denim combination. Back in October 2013 she wore a revealing version of the trend, once again while she was in Paris.
Perhaps she has been taking cues from her fiance Kanye West who doesn’t mind a Canadian tuxedo or two.
So how can you make the trend work at home without looking like a double denim disaster? Melissa Hoyer suggests that darker, vintage denim can be a good way to dabble your toe in the chambray waters without taking a full swim. You can also take a leaf out of Rihanna’s style book and try pairing it back with more street-style accessories.
But be careful people, double denim can be a slipper slope so let this retro snap of old flames Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake be a warning to us all.
