Big W brings back retro fitness brand from the ’90s
After more than 20 years, a nostalgic brand is returning. So dust off your scrunchies and crimp your hair, because the ’90s are officially back.
A retro fitness brand that fizzled out in the ’90s is making a comeback, with stock of the nostalgic-inducing clothing now being sold in Big W.
LA Gear became a cultural phenomenon after its launch in 1987. Fans were obsessed with the brand’s high top sneakers, often in those pink and purple hues associated with perms and scrunchies, and the American company soared in popularity.
But string of costly failures, including a failed high-profile collaboration with the late Michael Jackson, saw the company record a loss of $US51.4 million ($A71.8 million) in 1995, according to WWD.
The brand officially went bust three years later.
However, ’80s and ’90s fashion trends made a return last year, and while Gen Z might not recognise the name LA Gear, chances are they will be jumping on the brand’s resurgence.
The all-new mens and women’s range launch in Big W stores on Thursday, featuring 100 pieces that are sure to warp you back in time.
Think tie-dye prints, oversized hoodies with giant logos and cropped T-shirts.
“Big W is absolutely thrilled to be partnering exclusively with LA Gear on its comeback into the Australian market,” Lowri Breed, head of commercial apparel for the retailer, said.
“With its nostalgic nod to the ’90s, we know our customers will love the chance to brighten up their wardrobe with affordable pieces from the LA Gear range.”
In addition to the statement pieces, the collection also includes comfortable basics, such as leggings and crops for women and tracksuits and basic tee’s for men with prices ranging from $15 to $59.
