Saudi Arabian fashion show mocked for featuring no models

THERE’S edgy and cool and then there’s a step too far — this fashion show is being called the latter for its ridiculous catwalk.

EXPLAINER: Drones replace models on Milan catwalk

IF YOU’RE looking for the world’s creepiest fashion show, look no further than Saudi Arabia’s capital Riyadh.

The city's recent fashion week featured clothes from some of the world’s most expensive designers — including Dolce & Gabbana — all of which were awkwardly shown off and modelled down the catwalk by drones.

Because why would you need six-foot models to show off $1000-plus gowns when you can hang it on a coathanger and float it down a runway instead?

Saudi Arabia is still ultra-conservative, meaning Riyadh’s fashion week kept its audiences female-only and male fashion designers weren’t even allowed backstage at their own shows.

According to local news site The New Arab, organisers for the fashion show said the use of drones was a first for the Middle Eastern country and said the odd technique had been used to make sure the show was “Ramadan appropriate”.

The peculiar catwalk, which featured the clothes creepily billowing as they were driven throughout the room, has since been mercilessly mocked online.

Despite the head-scratching Riyadh fashion show, it isn’t the first time Dolce & Gabbana have used drones to feature their creations.

In February, at Milan Fashion Week, eight drones paraded down the Italian fashion house’s runway with handbags hanging off them.

The hi-tech fashion show was plagued with problems however, with the company repeatedly having to ask for all Wi-Fi connections to be turned off so their drones could drive smoothly down the runway.

The show eventually started 45 minutes after it was supposed to.

The bizarre show led The Cut to declare: “Being human is so last season”.

And in 2015, clothing company Betabrand also used drones at a Silicon Valley show to model clothes.
