NYFW photos: Extreme bikini takes over New York Fashion Week runway

If the latest fashion runways are anything to go by, Australians can expect to see a whole lot less swimsuit material at the beach this summer.

It looks like bikinis are set to get very skimpy this summer.

Models have hit the runway in swimsuit shows at New York Fashion Week where the adage “less is more” is being well and truly embraced.

At Revival Swimwear’s show this week models strutted down the catwalk in extremely high-cut swimsuits.

While it’s a trend that’s clearly going nowhere anytime soon, high-cut bikinis have proved divisive with shoppers labelling them a “monstrosity” and totally impractical.

Earlier this year a V-string bikini bottom from Australian brand Beginning Boutique went viral for all the wrong reasons when it was mocked for not having nearly enough fabric to cover a woman’s private parts.

A Facebook post advertising the bikini bottoms, which cost $39.95, racked up more than 150,000 comments likening them to “fanny floss”.

‘UNDERBOOB’ TREND HITS CLOTHING

While first reserved to swimwear, the underboob look has now moved into clothing and lingerie, with celebrities overseas well and truly embracing the somewhat impractical trend.

Leading the way are Emily Ratajkowski, Miley Cyrus and Kendall Jenner, who have all rocked the daring look in Instagram posts in the last few weeks.

In Australia, Instagram star Tammy Hembrow sported the trend in a photo posted last month, wearing a skimpy bra and underwear set that showed off plenty of underboob.

For those looking to try the underboob trend, several online retailers have got you covered — well, sort of.

ASOS is selling a white cropped singlet suitable “for that holiday you haven’t booked yet” for $20, while Pretty Little Thing have a slightly cheaper, albeit with less fabric, black crop top for $18.
