Eye contact! Anna Wintour, US Vogue editor, ditches sunnies at Australian Open

She’s known for her fringed bob and sunglasses. But US Vogue editor Anna Wintour sported a new look at the Australian Open.

She’s the queen of style and the most powerful woman in fashion.

Anna Wintour has turned heads at the Australian Open, sporting some seriously chic outfits on her first full-day courtside in Melbourne.

The US Vogue editor-in-chief is attending the Grand Slam tournament as a guest of Tennis Australia, wearing a printed Prada dress as she watched close friend Roger Federer lose to Greek sensation Stefanos Tsitsipas on centre court last night.

But there was one notable absence from her chic ensemble — she ditched her usual trademark Chanel sunnies.

Wintour, 69, teamed the midi-length, sleeved purple-and-white dress with a pair of snakeskin boots, a chunky necklace, and a dusty blue clutch as she sat in the crowd at Rod Laver Arena ... without her usual “armour”.

It’s rare for the style maven not to wear eyewear, even sporting them when she sat next to the Queen front row at London fashion week last year.

Of course, Wintour didn’t go without her Chanel shades for too long, eventually putting them on to watch the tennis.

Wintour is in Melbourne this week to attend the Open. Her schedule includes a talk at the tournament’s Inspirational Series, and attending an event at the National Gallery of Victoria where she will donate a Chanel suit from her personal wardrobe to the gallery.

The London-born fashion icon once described wearing sunglasses as “armour”.

“They are seriously useful,” Wintour said, according to The Cut.

“I can sit in a show and if I am bored out of my mind, nobody will notice.

“At this point, they have become, really, armour.”

Of course, Wintour was famously the inspiration for Meryl Streep’s acid-tongued fashion editor character Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada.

In an unprecedented tenure, Wintour has been the editor of American Vogue since 1988 and added to her role in 2013 when she became the artistic director for Condé Nast.

Wintour is a huge tennis fan and is close friends with Federer and Serena Williams, having featured tennis — and style — star Williams on the cover of Vogue.

She arrived in Melbourne yesterday on a flight from Los Angeles, wearing a Tory Birch dress she had worn previously.

Wintour will headline the Open’s Inspirational Series on Thursday where she will present a keynote address ahead of the women’s semi-finals.

She will also be honoured at a special ceremony between matches.

Wintour will attend a designer showcase presented by Vogue Australia on Friday.
