Fashion designer Daniel Lightfoot farewelled by friends and family in Brisbane
Every colour of the rainbow was on display as friends and family of fashion designer paid touching tribute to the industry giant after his sudden death on Christmas Day.
Friends and family wore their brightest colours as they gathered to say their final farewell to iconic Queensland fashion designer Daniel Lightfoot following his unexpected death on Christmas Day.
More than 200 mourners attended Victory Church in Brisbane for the funeral of the 58-year-old man on Thursday.
Remembered as a man who “always like to make an entrance”, mourners were led in prayer by pastor Yuan Miller so shared how Mr Lightfoot was “incredibly gifted, ever extravagant and had a “wicked sense of humor”.
The famous fashion designer was known for having “a love of expensive cars, diamonds and bling, yellow roses and of course a good party”, according to Mr Miller.
With the dress code being “anything but black”, loved ones walked into the church to a slide show of some of Mr Lightfoot’s most memorable designs to the tune of Madonna’s famous song Vogue.
His sudden death rocked the fashion industry, with his ex-wife, Suzie Lightfoot, and their daughter, Paris, remembering their “fashion angel”.
His daughter Paris remembered her father at his funeral on Thursday, sharing how much they shared their passion for life and a good steak.
She said Mr Lightfoot was “the most fun, hilarious” and “groovy” dad any girl could ask for.
“My dad was my biggest fan,” Paris said, wearing Australian designer L’idee.
“He spoilt me rotten, not many girls can say their dad bought them a pony but mine did without telling mum.”
“He was certainly the only dad to bring a bottle of french champagne to a game of AFL.”
Paris shared how her dad “taught me how to be lighthearted, outgoing and make people laugh”.
“He taught me to be unapologetically me,” she said.
“Sadly I did not get his talent because that was one of a kind.”
“(I hope you’re) laughing, joking, dancing and eating whatever your heart desires and dressing all those beautiful angels up there with you.”
Family friend Cathie Creagh said Mr Lightfoot’s passion for life was inspiring.
“Daniel continued to love his Princess P to the end,” she said.
“Beyond his talent and humor and propensity for adventure and for many of you here today a fun, we’ve lost a beloved brother, a devoted father and a cherished friend.
“Daniel was renowned for his meticulous attention to detail and exceptional customer service.
“He loved making grand entrances and holding the floor, he was never lost of for words.”
His ex-wife, Suzie, also wrote in a touching tribute on social media days after his death.
“Daniel touched so many lives through his incredible talent, craftsmanship and vision of beauty,” she said.
“He turned a simple piece of fabric into something truly magical and made the women he dressed shine like diamonds.
“He will always be lovingly remembered for his wicked sense of humour and sharp wit, appreciation for French Champaign, diamonds and bling, yellow roses, love of a good party, expensive cars, and dancing like everyone was watching (because they were!).
“You are safe now and can be the man you want to be again in heaven dressing all those beautiful angels in your creations.”
Friends and family have been asked to wear anything but black to honour Mr Lightfoot on Thursday.
The fashion designer’s high-profile clients included Liza Minnelli and former governor-general Quentin Bryce.
In 1985, Australia’s Miss World entrant Angelina Nasso wore one of his designs.
Mr Lightfoot had also mentored many aspiring designers at Queensland University of Technology’s fashion school.
