Chanel is selling a $1930 boomerang and people are not amused

IT’S safe to say the only thing this culturally insensitive “weapon” will kill is your bank balance and your credibility.

Q: WHAT do you buy the person who has everything?

A: Anything but this $1,930 Chanel boomerang.

Because not only will it set you back a mountain of cash, it will also make you look incredibly culturally insensitive.

The high-priced boomerang is part of Chanel’s luxury sports collection, which also includes tennis rackets for the bargain price of $2,200, beach rackets and balls for $4,860 and a pack of four tennis balls for $570. Now THAT is a tennis ball you are climbing over the fence to retrieve.

The luxe sports collection also includes a surfboard, that price of which is only available to interested customers upon “request” — which we all know translates to “eye-wateringly expensive, you can’t afford it”.

People are suitably unimpressed by the boomerang (which is made of wood and resin and is emblazoned with the iconic Chanel logo) and have taken to social media to express their dismay that the French fashion house is selling something that appropriates indigenous Australian culture.

“Cultural appropriation hits a new low — I sincerely hope that Chanel is donating all the profits to underprivileged Aboriginal communities,” Twitter user @BI0MECHANICAL wrote.

But it turns out this isn’t a new silly decision by Chanel. They’ve been doing this since 2006 when they began selling and showcasing boomerangs at a Hong Kong boutique for a “sport exhibition”.

Different coloured versions of the Chanel boomerang are being resold on other websites for $295 a piece.

It’s safe to say the only thing this “weapon” is going to kill is your bank balance and your credibility.

When news.com.au approached Chanel for comment regarding the boomerang backlash, they said “Chanel is extremely committed to respecting all cultures, and regrets that some may have felt offended.”
