Reddit calls Jarryd Zankovic a ‘wanker’ after B&T Magazine article

A “HYBRID of beauty therapist and tradie” who owns 40 pocket squares and calls his beard a “conversation piece” is copping it online.

HE’S been labelled “Australia’s biggest wanker” on social media after an interview in which he discusses his personal style.

But the marketing industry is getting behind Jarryd Zankovic, insisting that the 28-year-old art director should be “proud of who he is”.

Zankovic was mocked mercilessly on Reddit for his comments an article named “Industry Fashionista” in trade publication B&T Magazine.

The page was posted on Reddit under the title “Is this Australia’s biggest wanker?” and quickly went viral, with thousands of users taunting the “hybrid of beauty therapist and tradie”.

But B&T editor David Hovenden has now published an article on the magazine’s website entitled, “Not Australia’s biggest wanker”, defending Zankovic against the “trolls”.

He implores readers to support Zankovic’s individuality on Reddit under the hashtag #TeamJarryd, adding: “When a young man who’s at the top of his game is flamed by such a bunch of jealous bastards, it is truly an indictment on society.”

In the interview, Zankovic says his signature look consists of dark jeans and blazer, a “quirky” pocket square, no socks and drop-crotch pants.

Zankovic lives in Sydney’s hipster hub, Surry Hills.

These are particularly comfortable “for a dude who has a bit going on between his legs”, adds

Zankovic, who works at brand experience agency Play.

Originally from Wollongong, NSW, the 28-year-old now lives in Sydney’s hipster enclave Surry Hills, and says he “definitely fits that Surry Hills mould.”

Describing his haircare regime, he says he comes from a family of beauticians who have been waxing his eyebrows since he was 12, and gets his beard trimmed once a week — adding afterwards, “that sounds so much worse than it actually is.”

Some social media users think it sounds exactly as bad as it is, with typical comments on Reddit damning him as an “atomic douche nozzle”.

Other users didn’t seem to relate to Jarryd’s fashion sense, with some writing “buy pants that fit properly” and “put some socks on mate”.

Many claimed that despite his denial, he was the archetypal hipster, and that “all hipsters deny being hipsters”.

Another said Zankovic “would go close to beating out Tony Abbot for the prize [of Australia’s biggest wanker]”, while others even mocked the spelling of “Jarryd”.

But others called the thread “bullying” and “hipster shaming”, writing, “This is a real person”.

Several commented that they couldn’t see anything wrong with Zankovic’s comments, with one writing: “This guy just looks and speaks like many of my artsy friends”.

Christian Van Vuuren (Dom) and Nick Boshier (Adrian) became a YouTube sensation with their satirical Bondi Hipsters videos.

Another said Zankovic was just being honest, adding: “It seems like he’s even somewhat self aware, just that he probably correctly, thinks that anyone reading this magazine or whatever, will be able to appreciate what he’s saying.”

Zankovic’s company Play said: “We were surprised by the tone of the article — it certainly doesn’t reflect Jarryd’s nature at all — he’s a great guy who’s both talented and grounded.

“Although he’s always well-groomed, more than anything he was having a laugh at himself and general stereotypes — some things have been taken out of context.”

David Hovenden, editor-in-chief of B&T Magazine, said the publication stood by its journalism.

“It was done as a fun thing, written in jest and good humour, but everything he’s quoted as saying is what he said.

“He’s been trolled terribly on Reddit. He is part of our ‘30 under 30’ and we should be celebrating the success he’s achieved.

“He’s clearly mucking around, and we were when we wrote the piece.”
