Pip Edwards endorses return of jeans no-one wants

The PE Nation founder has predicted the return of a style that will send shudders through women across the nation.

When fashion designer Pip Edwards makes a trend prediction, we listen, even if it pains us.

The PE Nation co-Founder and creative director, whose highly sought after clothing has helped her build a $15 million business from scratch, has made a major call on a shudder-inducing Y2K trend – the return of low-rise jeans.

But wait, it gets worse – the low-rise jeans are also skinny.

Pip Edwards’ horrifying fashion prediction

The shocking revelation came when news.com.au checkout interviewed Ms Edwards at an event launching the latest PE Nation collection.

When asked what one item she has on high rotation from her wardrobe, she replied “A good, white ribbed singlet.”

Adding that she would style it “With jeans and a great belt.”

However, it was when she was asked what cut of jeans she’d choose that she sent a shudder through women across the nation with the suggestion of “skinny, low-rise jeans”.

“That would take me back to my Bettina Liano days,” she said, referring to the Italian Australian fashion designer whose low-rise jeans designs were hugely popular in the 2000s.

Are skinny jeans really coming back?

Skinny jeans were the most enduring trend of the 2000s – until Gen Z waged a TikTok war on leg-huggers.

According to Edwards, it’s Aussie brand Sass & Bide that is at the forefront of this dreaded style’s resurgence.

Its latest collection has somehow managed to do the impossible, make skinny jeans cool again.

The A-list have increasingly been embracing skinny jeans again – some even choosing a low rise too.

Fashion icon Bella Hadid started it when she was spotted sauntering around New York in a pair.

Then Kate Moss – the queen of fashion herself – was spotted out shopping in London in the killer combo – low-rise, skinny jeans.

Enter Hollywood A-lister Sofia Vergara, who chose a pair of skinny jeans with very Y2K-esque ripped and distressed detailing to wear for dinner with her new beau, surgeon Justin Saliman.

Low rise, skinny jeans have been all over catwalks

There were a lot of belly buttons on show at the most recent Fashion Weeks signalling that the low waist trend is alive and kicking.

Everyone from heritage designer brand Burberry, to Gen Z favourite Masha Popova, had a belly-baring outfit in their collection.

Meanwhile, Miu Miu showed skinny jeans, Balenciaga’s showed distressed jeans tucked into boots and Sean McGirr included skinny styles in his debut collection for Alexander McQueen.

Skinnies were also seen in various iterations at Saint Laurent, Blumarine, Prada and Gucci.

Whether this divisive denim style will make it onto the legs of normies and make an official comeback remains to be seen, but if they do, maybe we don’t need to be afraid, maybe instead we ask ourselves – how low will you go?
