Jessica Hart talks modelling, make-up, topknots and Portmans

HAVE YOU ever wondered what an international model thinks about right before they step on the runway?

We have, and lucky for us Jess Hart, who is back in town on a fly-in-fly-out visit for Portmans, was only too happy to give us an insight into a world we’ll never be part of.

“Don’t fall! That’s all I’m thinking!” she tells news.com.au.

“It really depends on the show I’m doing, but it’s just, be cool, slow down, that kind of thing,” she laughs.

Here’s what else we learnt from ten minutes with Jess:

SS14 is all about the twinsie

“I’m loving twinsies — I know that’s not it’s actual name, I think Portmans call it a match set, but it’s the full skirts and little crop tops, they’re a great idea for summer. Florals and prints are great because you can mix and match — you get four outfits in one. They were all I took on my summer vacation, it’s all I needed.”

How she manages to ace street-style, every single time

“My style is just very easy, some kind of version of jeans and a tee, and not so thrown together. As soon as someone tries too hard it becomes a mess.”

That now-famous topknot was an unintentional hit

“It’s really easy to do, it started when I was being super lazy and not wanting to wash my hair heading into the shower. I just tipped my head upside down, knotted it, and just left it for the day — and now I just do it all the time. If I’ve had a big day at work I’ll just pop it in a knot, and because it’s got so much product in it, it turns out looking quite great!”

She wears brown eyeliner and mascara

“Every day I use tinted moisturiser, bronzer and highlighter, brown mascara and eyeliner. Anything copper and orange and brown brings out blue eyes, and my eyes are blue. It just looks so much better. I layer black and brown together if I’m going out at night.”

Her make-up range LUMA is about to launch

“I’m really excited to launch LUMA in September, in Priceline and Myer. It’s got all my favourite products in there — tinted moisturiser, bronzer and highlighter, those kinds of things. We have also designed a one-off lipstick to raise funds for Pink Hope”

Exercise becomes a worry if you don’t get it done first thing

“I like to exercise in the morning, I feel like if I don’t I think about it all day and just talk myself out of it. I just go whenever I can in the morning, do a cycle class or a Pilates class, work with my PT, I just mix it up as much as I can. I walk my dog a lot.”

She’s the star of the first Portmans ad since Miranda Kerr’s days

“I got a sneak preview of the ad and it looks great, but it took all day to do! And it’s all condensed into 30 seconds. We shot it in NYC, all over the place, on the Brooklyn Bridge, on the streets. It looks beautiful and it was a lot of fun.”
