It is easy to hate Roxy Jacenko for being rich, but is it fair?

Roxy Jacenko is often hated for flaunting her lavish lifestyle, while other famous Aussie women aren’t. Why are some so quick to judge?

Sydney PR queen Roxy Jacenko has often been criticised for flaunting her wealth.

But when Zoe Foster Blake recently showed off her multimillion-dollar house in Vogue Living, she was met with praise rather than critique.

So why the different treatment?

Jacenko has never been shy about being rich. She happily shares photos of her lavish car collection, which includes a Mercedes and Porsche that both retail for more than $300,000.

She’ll also show off the interiors of her multimillion-dollar home in Sydney’s eastern suburbs or flaunt her lavish jewel collection on her Instagram.

Most recently, she shared her daughter Pixie’s expensive Christmas wish list.

Pixie, who is still in primary school, requested a Blue Goyard bag, which can retail for up to $5000.

Jacenko’s relationship with her wealth doesn’t sit well with some people.

When she shared her daughter’s Christmas wish list, one person commented, “Not something I’d be laughing at on Instagram!”

Another commented, “What kind of child are you raising?”

The general vibe on the internet was that while Jacenko might be able to spoil her daughter, it was in poor taste to share such a lavish list during a cost-of-living crisis.

Interestingly when beauty guru Zoe Foster Blake’s $8 million dollar home was featured in Vogue Living, she wasn’t hit with the same kind of response.

Blake posted the interiors of her lavish home on Instagram, and the comments were filled with praise. No one was calling her out for flashing her wealth during a time when the cost of bread has gone up so much that the plot in Les Miserables now feels slightly relatable.

One user commented, “This is outstanding!”

Another commented, “This is everything!”

Foster Blake’s home quickly went viral, and many celebrities, including Rebecca Harding and Pip Edwards, praised her for her incredible taste.

No one, accused her of being tone-deaf or a bad mother for raising her children in such a lavish environment.

So why do these women get such vastly different reactions when both are showing off their wealth online?

According to psychotherapist Julie Sweet, it comes down to how relatable we find someone. She explained: “As human beings, we often look for commonalities, similarities and connection with others. We continually question whether or not we can relate to someone.

“It’s thought that we’re able to empathise more readily and understand another if we can relate to them, more so if we can see ourselves in another. When someone else’s story resonates, we often feel seen, that we’re not alone, that there’s another person who accepts us, without judgment.”

Basically, Sweet explained that people are harsher on Jacenko because they find it harder to relate.

She said: “If we struggle to have compassion for another, or cannot process what someone else may be experiencing, we can lose the capability of hearing their voice. This kind of discord can divine individuals and sometimes result in contempt, disdain and hostility towards one another.

“It’s mindful to be aware that when we sit in comparative self-criticism though, generally we are comparing ourselves to others, and the outcome can be discovering a self lacking. As the age-old saying goes, ‘comparison is the thief of joy’.”

So perhaps next time we find ourselves mad at Jacenko, we may have to think does she deserve our fury?
