Woolies gives shoppers free $85 Christmas hams in one of many random acts of kindness
The retailer has revealed it is giving away “delicious food from our Christmas range” to shoppers at random – and you could be next.
First it was an $20 lobster deal that got everyone excited about the dreaded festive grocery shop.
But now Woolworths has revealed it is dishing out $85 Christmas hams at random to shoppers free of charge.
The supermarket giant made the exciting giveaway to a shopper who wrote on the retailer’s Facebook page to thank them for her free ham.
“Thank you Woolworths Maddington for the lovely surprise today when shopping with my nephew. We were gifted a Christmas ham and ham bag that was greatly appreciated,” the woman said.
Alongside her post she shared a photo of the double smoked half leg ham which had a price tag of $85.20 on it. She also received a ham bag to store the Christmas favourite in.
In response to her post – which was shared on December 11 – a spokesperson replied, explaining the “gift” was one of many random acts of kindness being given out in Woolworths stores across the country after a “tough year”.
“We’re so pleased to hear how much you loved this little surprise! After a tough year, we’re really excited to help share the Christmas spirit with both our team and customers in our stores.
“In the lead up to Christmas, our store teams across the country have been looking for opportunities to surprise and delight our customers by sharing delicious food from our Christmas range. Enjoy!”

While there’s no way to guarantee shoppers will get a free ham or any other item of food, the news has spread like wildfire on social media.
“It could happen to any of us,” one person wrote on Facebook.
“I know where I’ll be doing my Chrissie food shopping. Not to get a free ham, but to support a business that gives and stays true to the Aussie Christmas spirit. We’ll done Woolies!” another said.
While one woman said “I got one for free yesterday. Happy days.”
It’s not the only supermarket deal that has caused excitement in the run up to the silly season, with Woolworths and Coles introducing limits on a $20 lobster deal after it caused a shopper frenzy.
Woolworths told news.com.au it has introduced a four per person cap on the luxury seafood item after seeing an “incredible” customer demand.
“Since introducing our WA Rock Lobsters across Australia last week, we’ve seen incredible customer demand,” a Woolworths spokesperson said.
“To ensure as many customers as possible can enjoy Rock Lobster in the lead up to Christmas, we’ve placed a limit of four lobsters per customer, per transaction.”
The spokesperson said the supermarket chain has good stock levels to draw on and teams are working hard to continue replenishing lobsters as quickly as possible.

A Coles spokesperson also told news.com.au they were placing a “temporary” limit as they assured customers more lobsters were on their way into stores.
“It is great that so many customers want to support our local seafood industry, which has seen some of our stores sell out of Western Rock Lobsters, currently priced at just $20 each,” they said.
“More lobsters will be arriving in our stores throughout the week and up until Christmas.
“From tomorrow, we are temporarily placing a purchase limit of 4 lobsters per person to help ensure more customers can enjoy this luxury treat at an affordable price this Christmas.”
It comes after both Woolies and Coles announced they would be selling WA Rock Lobsters for $20 a pop – half the price they were this time last year.
