IT TURNS out Marla Maples isn’t as skilled at the art of the deal as her ex-husband.

Ms Maples, who has a daughter with Donald Trump and was married to him for six years, tried to bargain with a Washington DC hairstylist to get free mother-daughter coifs for Inauguration Day according to the New York Post.

And now, freelance stylist Tricia Kelly, who nearly took the job but ultimately decided to turn it down, is receiving threats after she shared her story.

“I’ve turned away several things for fame,” she said. “But I felt like things like this shouldn’t be silenced. This is about people taking advantage of you and the industry.”

Ms Kelly, who regularly works with prominent politicians including members of the Obama administration and the incoming Trump team, said she was contacted on January 4 by a client who was connected with Ms Maples and her daughter, Tiffany.

She was initially interested in the gig and shared her rates, which included a standard $150 travel fee in addition to the styling costs.

Ms Maples’ assistant wrote back that they only had a $300 budget for hair and makeup, so Ms Kelly agreed to do it for $200.

But then Ms Maples’ assistant tried to cut a different deal — proposing that Ms Kelly style both Ms Maples’ and Tiffany’s hair for free in exchange for social media posts and “exposure”.

“I absolutely will not work for free for anyone that can afford services just for a power trip,” she wrote back in a message on January 9. “Their staff will be paying full price for everything they need done that weekend including from me.”

“I will work for a fee, not for free. If they want free, they can go somewhere else,” she added.

And after she went public with the details of the failed deal, which was first reported Tuesday by The Washington Post, she said she was threatened by the client who initially put her in touch with Trump’s camp.

“You are messing with the president of the United States,” the menacing message said. “I don’t think you realise the power my clients have. That your reputation could just as much be on the line.”

But so far, Ms Kelly has only had one person cancel on her — a member of the Trump team who was supposed to come in Tuesday afternoon — and she’s been receiving calls all day from new clients.

And despite the drama, Ms Kelly is still going to go to the inauguration Friday.

“I just love being a part of the good and bad and everything that inaugurations represents to us as Americans,” she said.
