The Beauty Diary: $17 Maybelline Sky High mascara review

A video that has been viewed millions of times around the world caused hysteria over a budget beauty item that has been declared “the best”.

TikTok video causes global frenzy for $17 mascara

“Totally worth the hype.”

Those are the four words I keep seeing attached to a pink tube of mascara popping up all over the internet lately.

The highly-talked about item is Maybelline’s Sky High Mascara and thanks to a very impressive TikTok video, everyone has been going nuts for it.

In the 60-second clip viewed more than 4.5 million times, US user @jessica.eid_, applies three coats of the black mascara to her lashes and WOW. The results are insane.

Like, seriously – they look like they are touching her eyebrows.

Since then a flurry of people around the world have rushed to get their hands on the product and there are currently 155 million views on TikTok alone for the hashtag #skyhighmascara.

While on Twitter there are streams of reviews, many declaring the beauty product – which retails for $17.39 in Chemist Warehouse in Australia – an item every mascara wearing human needs.

There are also countless tweets from people who are desperate to get their hands on the “magic tube” as the hype has caused the item to sell out in multiple countries around the world.

In the US, it has sold out four times since it launched in January, and finding one of these pink babies on our shores has been just as tricky.

Albina Reale, national category buyer for Chemist Warehouse, told news.com.au’s The Beauty Diary sales had been “sky high”.

“We are beyond thrilled with the sales of the new Maybelline Sky High Mascara,” she said. “As the name suggests, sales have been sky-high.”

Ms Reale said the unexpected demand had made it “our biggest mascara launch ever” – making it a “must have product”.

Even former WAG Nadia Bartel recently took to Instagram to reveal she was a fan, sharing a video applying where she described it as “amazing” and “epic”.

So obviously, I needed to get this mascara on my stubby lashes pronto.

DOES IT LIVE UP TO THE HYPE?

The first hurdle I had to jump over was getting my hands on a tube of this stuff which even is rarely in stock.

When the envelope landed on my desk, I wasted no time in whacking it on, following the three coat technique Jessica went for in the original viral video.

I’ll be honest, the first coat was a little underwhelming. As you can see, it barely made a difference. I found the formula a little clumpy too which I think was down to the bendy wand and there being excess product on it.

It wasn’t a big deal though, you can easily fix it with a spoolie by brushing the lumps out of your lashes.

The “flex tower” brush, which has small spiky bristles, might not have been the best at brushing through the product, but it is very good at reaching those teeny tiny hairs in the corners of your eyes.

The second coat was dramatically different. My lashes were noticeably longer and looked much thicker too. Again, it definitely needed some spoolie action to remove a few clumps and to separate lashes – but the result was very dramatic.

However, the third coat is definitely where the magic happens as it left my lashes looking like I was wearing falsies. Unlike the videos, I couldn’t achieve it without the use of a spoolie. The Maybelline bristles just aren’t long enough in my opinion.

But the formula definitely doesn’t disappoint. In terms of staying power I found didn’t smudge or flake at all – even during a sweaty Barry’s Bootcamp class, and that’s saying something. I’ve emerged from that 50-minute workout with many a panda eye in the past (naming no names – or should I? Let me know) so I know it is quite an accomplishment.

So yeah, I can totally see why so many people have been frothing over this mascara. If you’re keen to give it a whirl, brace yourself for the amount of product you have to use. Three coats felt really alien and unnatural to me at first. But it’s worth pushing through as the finish is seriously next level.
