TENNIS superstar Serena Williams has become the latest celebrity to cop criticism for altering an image of herself.

The 34-year-old was forced to delete a photo from her Instagram account over the weekend, after more than 600 fans claimed the image was photoshopped to make her waist appear slimmer.

The image, which was posted on Williams’ account last week, was taken from People magazine’s ‘Most Beautiful Women of 2016’ spread.

But the image, which shows the tennis ace in a black leotard, came under fire just hours after being posted with hundreds of social media users criticising the snap for being photoshopped.

“I love her but the bar behind her waist is so warped. Disappointing,” one commenter said.

“You look beautiful the way you are. Yes this is a great picture but don’t feel this is the best representation of your actual body type,” another said.

“I LOVE what you stand for and wish others would quit trying to alter your message and genetics!”

Apparently noticing the uproar around the photo, the world number one replaced the altered image with an identical snap over the weekend. The new image, however, didn’t appear to be retouched and was met with praise and appreciation from her 3.1 millions followers.

“This looks much better … the other one was photoshopped to death. I like this picture better,” one commenter said under the new image.

“Glad she took the photoshopped version down. This is gorgeous!,” another said.

“So much better and stronger without the retouching!”

The replacement photo, captioned “@people mag most beautiful 2016” has received more than 44,000 likes.

This isn’t the first time Williams has copped criticism and accused of being photoshopped for a magazine. In December 2015, she appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine, with social media users claiming the tennis star had her thighs and face altered.

“I LOVE @serenawilliams but there’s too much photoshop in the SI cover, especially on her face,” one Twitter user posted.

“Why’d they Photoshop her thighs tho,” another said.

A spokesperson for the Sports Illustrated magazine denied such accusations, saying they didn’t touch the cover at all.

“We did nothing to change the integrity of the cover image or likeness of Serena Williams,” a spokesperson told Huffington Post at the time.
