‘Quick and easy’: Why Elly Awesome rates the Dyson Airwrap

At just shy of $900, this hair styling product isn’t cheap, but with its range of functions and ease of use, it’s worth every cent.

Dyson has just launched a major update to its hair-styling tool, which is now available in Australia.

You may already be familiar with the Dyson Airwrap – a styling tool that can easily curl, wave and smooth your hair from home with ease. It’s back, and even better than before.

The Airwrap originally launched in 2018 and, honestly, this product is almost as good as having your own live-in hair stylist – except it enables you to easily do the styling yourself without forking out for salon appointments. The product is known for being a really easy way to give your hair curls or waves but now it can do so much more than that due to the numerous styling attachments it comes with.

Unboxing

Opening up the new Dyson Airwrap box, you’re greeted with a stylish oval case, which houses the Airwrap and all its accessories.

It looks luxurious and futuristic, and once you lift the lid of the case you’ll find a QR code that you can scan with your phone, which will take you to a website filled with instructional videos on how to use the product.

It’s really straightforward, so even if you’re completely new to the Airwrap you’ll be able to figure out how to use it within minutes. Seriously, I’m a novice with this and I picked it up straight away.

The Airwrap itself is like a beautified lightsaber hilt, available in multiple colours, to which you attach styling weapons. This includes options such as a firm brush (to brush and tame thick hair), a soft brush (which helps to both dry and tame thin hair while brushing), a 30mm and 40mm Airwrap barrel for creating luscious curls, a round brush for lift and a new smoothing dryer attachment. This attachment, named “coanda” is part of Dyson’s signature inventions. It has the ability to smooth flyaways or small broken hairs and is quite magical.

This tool is also a two-in-one as it can be tweaked (with a rotating switch) to be used to get your hair about 80 per cent dry, replacing the previous Airwrap’s blow-drying (pre-styling dryer) attachment.

Dyson coanda attachment

A convenient segway – to use the Airwrap effectively, ideally you should have damp hair. Something like 80 per cent dry would be about perfect. Alternatively, you can spray your dry hair with water and then you can get straight to styling.

The new coanda attachment worked well for drying hair. I wouldn’t say the drying feature is seriously improved from the previous pre-styling dryer but the new ability to smooth flyaways is awesome. If you’ve seen my hair you’ll know that it’s fairly short and wavy, and although this product is certainly targeted at people with mid-length to long, straight hair, it can be used to style tight or even wiry ringlet curls, and short hair like mine.

But as my long-locked female partner had gotten out of the shower right as I sat down to write this review, I thought why not have her be the perfect test case.

How to use the Dyson Airwrap

Honestly, I’ve never had a knack for doing hairstyles besides a couple of plaits. I used to just straighten it. I never appreciated my natural waves when I was younger and I was always weak at styling beachy waves on my previously longer hair – let alone anyone else’s!

But I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was for me to style my partner’s hair – I promise you anyone could do it – yes, men too.

With the Airwrap barrel attachment you take a portion of hair, place it near the end of the attachment and it will gently pull the hair around it, curling onto the barrel.

Then you move the Airwrap towards your hair’s roots and it wraps all the way up – you don’t need to do any rotating motions yourself. You only need to hold it there for about 10 seconds, on hot or cold settings (with different intensities) and then gently pull the Airwrap away to leave behind a perfect bouncy curl.

Well, colour me impressed. I’m ready to take bookings!

In only about 15 minutes (OK, maybe 20) I gave my partner a full head of beachy waves and she was looking gorgeous – I mean, even more gorgeous.

Pricing

Dyson, you’ve done it again. Honestly, this thing is bloody expensive but I personally don’t know if I’ll ever look back. It makes hair styling so quick and easy.

You’re looking at about $899 for the complete Airwrap set here in Australia.

But great news – if you already own an Airwrap you can just purchase the new attachments individually from Dyson for $99 each, and even try before you buy them in Dyson stores.
