Queer Eye star Jonathan Van Ness launches JVN Hair in Australia
Queer Eye star Jonathan Van Ness has launched his own beauty brand to rave reviews overseas – now it’s finally arrived in Australia.
Queer Eye star Jonathan Van Ness is launching his hugely successful clean haircare brand in Australia.
The Emmy-nominated Netflix star partnered with US biotechnology company Amyris to create JVN Hair, a range of 11 haircare products that can be mixed and matched together.
As well as having “clean” formulas, all of which are built around the same core ingredient Hemisqualane, JVN Hair has a huge focus on sustainability and features “infinitely recyclable” bottles made from aluminium and glass.
The products, which first launched in Sephora stores across the US last August, will hit the beauty retailer’s Australian stores on April 26 with prices starting at $28.
To celebrate the launch Down Under, Jonathan (reluctantly) shared his favourite products from the range with news.com.au, stating it pained him to do so.
“It’s so hard – I feel like I’m choosing a favourite child,” he said.
“I really love the Nurture Deep Moisture Mask. It features camellia seed oil which is super hydrating and rice protein to add shine and strengthen hair.
“A lot of people are afraid of masks because they can weigh hair down but this one leaves your hair soft and shiny without ever feeling greasy.
“But my accidental favourite is the Embody Daily Volumizing Shampoo and Conditioner. Traditionally a lot of volumising products can have alcohol in them, making hair feel dry or crunchy.
“Our formulas have all of these delicious ingredients like caffeine, to stimulate your scalp and follicles, and bamboo extract, which is rich in natural silica to add volume and shine. Your hair is just so bouncy and looks so healthy. I’m obsessed.”
Jonathan’s intimate knowledge of JVN Hair’s formulas makes it clear this is no ordinary celebrity beauty launch, with the professional stylist explaining he used his 15 years of experience to create a product for “everyone”.
“I’ve got a huge passion for education and understanding product, it’s really important to achieving hairstyle – especially achieving and maintaining healthy hair,” Jonathan said.
“That’s why we’ve formulated our products for hair concerns rather than hair types.
“So whether you’re someone who has really fine hair or you’re someone who has thick, course, kinky coily hair, all of our products are going to work for you.”
One of the “standout” details in the products according to Jonathan is the “hero” ingredient Hemisqualane which features in the product formulas.
“It’s a sugarcane based superior alternative to silicone, so it gives your hair immediate moisture, shine, bounce – it dramatically improves the integrity of your hair,” he explained.
“It’s an amazing, clean, sustainable ingredient that works wonders on hair.
“It’s also silicone free and sulfate free which is also good for the environment as well as your hair, so we just love Hemisqualane.”
Jonathan also stressed the products were proudly “nongendered”, explaining the messaging – such as the brand’s tagline “come as you are” – we all designed to be inclusive, spread positivity and inspire self-care.
“For so long the beauty industry has been very exclusive in who it caters to,” he explained.
“It’s always been trying to make certain people, feel more welcome.
“I was assigned male at birth and I always felt like I wasn’t supposed to want to play with my hair and I wasn’t supposed to want to feel beautiful. So I always felt unwelcome in the beauty space.
“So I just want everyone to know, no matter who you are, your gender, your age, your race, you’re allowed to play with your hair and feel beautiful while doing it.”
While the products are new to Australia, they hit stores in the US nine months ago to rave reviews.

The products are so highly rated, one desperate Australian took to Reddit last year to plead with the internet for help getting them shipped Down Under.
Thankfully extreme measures are no longer required as Australians can pop into their local Sephora or have it delivered through the retailer’s online delivery service.
