The 36-year-old shed 114kg from her 185kg frame after the embarrassing incident, and while she has been praised on social media for her transformation, not everyone is loving her new look.

The mother of three from Las Vegas has been targeted by “fat activists” who send her vicious messages online.

She was told to “jump off a bridge” and kill herself by people who objected to her weight loss, she claimed in an interview with TMZ.

Not everyone is thrilled with Mercado’s slimmed down frame.

“I got hate mail ... Not so much from the other models, just fans that hated on me,” she told the Daily Mail.

“Because I guess everybody loves to be happy in their own weight. Some people love being overweight, some people don’t.

“I think it’s a personal choice and you’ve just got to take it, there’s good and bad that comes with any life choice and changes so you know what?

“You’ve just got to let it go and not pay attention to the negative remarks.”

She said her critics did not like her being “authentic and open” about the changes to her body and her subsequent tummy tuck and skin removal.

Despite losing almost half her former body weight she said she is still plus-size, adding: “I love it.”

Earlier this year Sports Illustrated cover girl Ashley Graham was trolled in a similar way.

After posting an Instagram photo in July that displayed a somewhat slimmer figure, Graham received backlash from her fans:

“Where are your curves?! “ one person commented on the image.

“You did lose a lot of weight,” another wrote. “I am no longer a fan of yours. You betrayed a lot of people!”

“Why are you changing yourself? I thought you were comfortable being yourself and being plus size,” another commenter wrote.

“Fake fat person … You’re not overweight, stop saying you are”.

“What happened to embracing your size? You advertise that message then go and lose weight? I mean hey more power to you, but idk ... puzzled.”

Graham responded to the fat activists on Snapchat, with an image of herself with the text, “I will not let others dictate what they think my body should look like for their own comfort, and neither should you.”
