OLIVIA Wilde wants you to know that the glamorous actress you see on the big screen looks nothing like the in-real-life Olivia Wilde.

The actress recently tweeted an image of a lighting set up frequently used on film sets.

“Don’t compare yourself to actors,” she tweeted. “You too would look ‘perfect’ with a giant wall of soft light following you around.”

The 31-year-old mother explained the context behind her tweet to Huffington Post Live.

“I guess I’m a proponent in general of people loving themselves,” she said.

“I looked at this huge wall of glowy light and all these bounce boards underneath me, and I thought, ‘People at home watching movies thinking that they’re supposed to look a certain way, in that flawless nature that Hollywood promotes in some films ... I just wanted to point out ... that none of this is real.

“I feel like when I was an adolescent that would have been kind of illuminating for me.”

In her new movie Meadowland, Wilde plays a mother whose son goes missing. Wilde spends most of the film makeup-free, wearing track pants and baggy jumpers — a look that would have many Hollywood actresses running for the hills.

But Wilde says the decision was “really freeing”.

“It wasn’t even a big choice to not to wear makeup. We were like, ‘Well if you were going through this pain you wouldn’t get up in the morning and put makeup on, she can barely take a shower. It was just a reality for the character and certainly didn’t feel like a brave risk ... I don’t hear people calling men brave for not wearing foundation.”
