British fashion designer Christopher Kane has created a limited edition collection of make-up for Nars (he also designed the infamous “penis” dress rapper FKA Twigs wore to the Met Gala).
It’s all about “neon neutral” — adding a pop of colour to your otherwise low-key palette.
Speaking for the launch of Nars x Christopher Kane, Mecca Cosmetica head of artistry Tony Baumann has given his three rules to follow when overhauling your make-up in winter.
NO BRONZER
Sadly for the Kardashians, bronzer shoudn’t be a staple for winter beauty.
“Put the bronzer away,” Baumann said.
“I love bronzer but we need to use it for contour only during the winter months.
“Winter make-up, to me, is a bit more polished, the foundation has more of a matte finish, the lips are bolder, it’s more of a classic look for winter. It’s nice to formalise your make-up a bit more in winter.”
BLUSH
The winter chill means the skin can look lifeless and dull. Enter blush.
A nude shade on the cheeks can be used for subtle contouring, Baumann said.
“You could use this for contouring, through the cheekbones to give you definition, but also you can use it on the apples of the cheeks when you want to add dimension to the face.
“It works for winter if you’re wearing a plum lip.”
But what if you’ve gone too heavy with the blush?
“If you’ve put too much blush on, go over it with a bit of loose powder or pressed powder,” Baumann said. “It sort of airbrushes everything.”
SKINCARE
“You need to adapt your skincare because your skin gets a lot more dehydrated and dry in winter due to the climate and you’re in a lot of heating,” Baumann said.
“And your skin does change, so you need to up your skincare.
“That will improve how foundation performs on your skin. You need to go to something a bit richer for the winter months and exfoliate more, at least twice a week.”
NARS X CHRISTOPHER KANE
The 10-piece limited edition collection is described as “neon neutral”, featuring blush, lip glosses, highlighter and eye shadows, and is stocked in Mecca Cosmetica nationally, including its counters at Myer.
“This collection is about bringing neon tones into your make-up but keeping it quite neutral, so it’s almost a contradiction,” Baumann said.
“It plays with pigment and texture allowing you to wear colour but in a sheer way.
“It’s his method in fashion that he (Kane) is interpreting through cosmetics.”
