‘From school bus to cute girl’: The outrageous fat-shaming website slimming the stars
REBEL Wilson, Melissa McCarthy and other plus-size women have had their famous curves trimmed by a social media movement outraging the internet.
AUSSIE actor Rebel Wilson has been digitally slimmed by a fat-shaming social media movement called Project Harpoon, that’s attracting both outrage and support online.
Wilson, American comedian Melissa McCarthy and dozens of other plus-sized women are among those whose curves have been removed, supposedly to inspire health, with altered images posted on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
“Support the movement of being in shape and not feeding into obesity! #thinnerbeauty,” the Instagram account suggests.
Other before-and-after posts are accompanied by humiliating captions such as “from school bus to cute girl,” and “from Miss Piggy to Miss Pin-up”.
The Project Harpoon Facebook page has garnered nearly 10,000 likes, but also plenty of criticism from readers, who say the movement bullies people already struggling with body image.
The anonymous moderator of the page responded to criticism in the comments by saying: “If I offend 1000 people but inspire one to lose weight and live a longer happier life then ya (sic) that’s fine by me.”
But other commenters disagree, defending Wilson, McCarthy and the voluptuous models who appear on the pages.
“This is wrong and not the right way to go about it,” wrote Jared Dalgleish on Facebook. “There is nothing wrong with a BBW (big beautiful woman). Just because someone is big doesn’t mean they are unhealthy either.”
