AND in major breaking news, Kim Kardashian has bleached her hair blonde.

While the news has rocked the fashion and reality TV worlds, hairdressers are unanimous in their thoughts.

“Don’t try this at home,” says Renya Xydis of Valonz Haircutters while in Paris working on shows at fashion week.

“While we all love celebrities and can’t wait to see what they do next, it isn’t always a great idea to copy their hairstyles,” she adds.

“Celebrities are a great source of inspiration however you have to be mindful of your face shape and maintenance and they have an army of hair and makeup teams, so be realistic about what style not only suits you but works for your lifestyle.”

Renya says solid block colours are a great look that you will often see in editorials or on the runway and work well with a strong red lip but are fairly high maintenance.

Renya says the cardinal rule for blondes is keeping it clean.

“The two ‘absolutes’ to get the best blonde is using Wella Blondor and Freelights and using Olaplex alongside them,” she says.

“Olaplex dramatically reduces breakage and keeps the integrity of the hair while the other cardinal rule is the hair must be healthy as there is nothing worse than hair that’s been over bleached and dried out. It looks terrible. It’s imperative to keep up regular treatments at home.”

“It takes a lot of work being blonde’ says Renya Xydis, Wella Ambassador and owner of Valonz salons.

The thing is, platinum, bleached hair is bloody hard work. And it’s timely to maintain.

It can be incredibly bad for your hair if is constantly bleached and bleached, according to blonde expert, George Giavis of The Blonde Room in Sydney.

“While Emma Stone carried off the platinum blonde look so well in Birdman, I am not as much of a fan of Kim Kardashian’s new do,” says George.

“As a colourist I am glad to see her being adventurous, but I am not sure that it suits her skin tone and her thick lustrous hair is not shown to its advantage.

“That said, she has clearly been to an expert colourist and the job is good. and it’s definitely a new ‘breaking the internet’ moment with an edgy, modern punk feel.

“But I am concerned that it may have done damage to her hair.”

George’s rules are pretty simple.

“Don’t try this at home as it is a dramatic colour change requiring bleach and if not applied properly can result in hair breakage, damage and dryness,” he adds.

“Your hair needs to be in excellent condition before you start so you need to do a series of treatments in the lead up and try not to wait too long between retouches as the colour on the ends will change and it will be difficult for your colourist to match.”

George also says a new hair colour will require a make up overhaul. Enter, more expense!

Mr Giavis suggests you should seek the help of an experienced colourist and check out to see if they use a product like Olaplex, which is added to the colour and helps stop breakage.

“You’ll need products specifically designed for platinum blondes and you’ll have to use weekly treatments.”

Meanwhile, Jared Leto has also just debuted his new blonde locks in Paris.

BLEACHED BLONDE TIPS:

• Use a leave-in UV protection spray as this as this will protect your hair as it is at a very porous state once is has been bleached. You want to look like a chic, not tortured blonde.

• Using a ‘blonde’ shampoo each week should counterbalance any brassiness or yellowing of your blonde locks.

• Smoking can help turn you hair a fairly bad shade of yellow, so do your entire body a favour by giving up the fags.

• If you swim in a chlorinated pool, chances are your blonde may turn murky green as the chlorine attaches itself to bleached hair. Go the swimming cap.

• Just like your skin, remember to moisture your hair: summer and aircon takes it out of our skin and our hair is no different.
