Beauty Diary: Luxury shower in Crown Spa loved by billionaires

The only people who own this elaborate shower are the elite 1 per cent – but there’s spot in Sydney where Aussies can try it out.

Beauty Diary: How to blow dry your hair at home

For my birthday this year I wanted to pretend I was a real-life billionaire, so I booked myself a cheeky staycation at an ultra-luxury Australian hotel.

The idea was that for 24 hours, I’d indulge in only the yummiest food, treat myself to a few beauty treatments and would even get a next-level sleep on a cloudlike mattress - because if we can’t YOLO every now and again, then what on earth are we doing?

That’s how I ended up on a solo excursion to Crown Towers Sydney, and while my credit card took a serious battering, I can confirm – I’ve never looked or felt so fresh.

After parting ways with the best part of $700 for a Deluxe King Room, I decided to go the whole hog and booked a visit to the Crown Spa, where you can easily kiss goodbye to another $1000.

I know what you must be thinking; have I gone insane? Especially as we’re in the midst of a cost of living crisis.

But the reality is I’ve cut back drastically on my spending, and rarely have expensive nights out – so I threw caution to the wind for one night only.

With my credit card bill still weeks away, I checked into the fancy city resort, and then headed down to be pampered and pummelled by the best in the beauty business.

The spa inside the six-star hotel is every bit as luxurious as you’d expect, with fluffy white robes and Grown Alchemist products in every shower and basin.

First up on my agenda was making the most of the wellness facilities, which included the iconic vitality spa you’ve seen all over social media as well as a steam room, sauna and Swiss shower.

After taking a dip in the spa, I stepped into the Swiss shower, which is essentially a tiled alcove that featured an array of different overhead and vertical shower heads.

The hydrotherapy treatment combines a “gentle rainfall”, which drops from above, alongside various massage spray heads built into the walls at different levels, which are said to have great lymphatic benefits and even target cellulite.

It’s a truly unique experience, as the water wraps around you hitting at different speeds and variations.

To be honest, it’s quite difficult to describe, but it’s very refreshing and highly memorable.

Most important of all, the elaborate shower is definitely not something I have access to at home as the only people who have the money (and the space) to own a Swiss shower are the elite 1 per cent.

But that just added to the joy of the experience as it isn’t something I could do anywhere else.

Next up, I went in for a relaxation massage. It lasted 60 minutes but it felt like much longer - probably because I was essentially laid on a bed, complete with a pillowy doona, which naturally sent me to sleep.

The oils used were really hydrating on my skin, my entire body felt super soft for days afterwards, which I thoroughly enjoyed as I’m guilty of skipping body care when I’m busy.

But I wasn’t done there with my millionaire moment, as I’d also booked in for Crown Sydney Spa’s signature treatment; the 60-minute Skin Caviar Essential facial.

Performed using only La Prairie products, the $380 treatment is excessively indulgent, but as it was a birthday present to myself I felt justified in the splurge.

The last time I had one of these facials was back in 2021 after I was invited in to review it for this column, so I knew all too well how incredible the results were.

luxury Swiss skincare brand La Prairie is famed for its formulations, which contain high concentrations of active ingredients.

The brand states it combines a mix of science, independent clinical trials and rare ingredients such as caviar and gold to create the products beauty lovers know and love.

In total, I spent two hours in the spa having both my treatments back-to-back, and in truth I only left the massage bed because the spa staff lured me out with the promise of tea and snacks in the meditation room.

Talking of food, after all that pampering, I’d worked up quite the appetite so I concluded my pretending-I’m-rich escapades at Crown Sydney’s famous buffet restaurant, Epicurean.

After all, nothing else screams “I’m wealthy” like an oyster tower, and champagne.

Once I was done, I rolled up to my room and enjoyed the million dollar view before I fell asleep on the famous $2500 mattress, and enjoyed the best and most expensive sleep of my life.

Of course, this sort of experience is a once in a blue moon treat, and definitely not something I can afford to do regularly.

But going back to my ordinary Sydney home completely rested and with the glowiest skin definitely made the blow out worthwhile. Hopefully I get to do it again one day.
