VEGAN actor Alicia Silverstone has launched a breast milk sharing program for like-minded mothers who are struggling to find donated milk from those who share their lifestyle choices.

The Clueless star recently announced the program through her blog- The Kind Life- which will collect breast milk from a network of mothers for women who cannot breastfeed or struggle to produce enough milk for their babies.

The idea for the breast milk drive came from a fellow vegan friend of the star who struggled to produce enough breast milk for her child, following breast reduction surgery.

"She tried reaching out in her community for donor milk, but it was almost impossible to figure out what kind of lifestyle choices the donors had made. And after all that hard work keeping herself vibrant and healthy, she felt she had a right to demand better for her baby," the actor wrote on her blog.

"Because we are a community of beautiful souls who recognize the importance of food as health, I say we help support those mamas and babies who need a hand during one of the most important times in their lives.

"It's why I'm starting the Kind Mama Milk Share, a way for moms to connect with other moms in their area. If you have milk to share - post it! If you are in need of milk - post it! Think of all the babies we can help raise together!"

The 36-year-old's blog is based on her vegan book The Kind Diet and offers readers recipes and party planning tips.

Silverstone's web fans have welcomed the idea and are happy to help out where they can.

"I just want to comment to say that this is such a wonderful idea. I am vegan, and had so much trouble in the beginning breastfeeding my son because I was not producing enough milk. I was beside myself, I went through months of around-the-clock pumping to try to boost my supply, I took every natural galactogogue you can name, I even tried prescription medication to boost my supply. I never gave up, but I was forced to supplement with soy formula. The good news is that because I never gave up, and continued to nurse my son as much as I possibly could, my supply did eventually increase and now at 19 months old, he is still happily nursing. However, because I am now pregnant with my 2nd child, my supply has suddenly decreased again, as often happens when pregnant. I would have been so thrilled to know of a vegan milk share in those early months when I was having so much trouble. I trust that with this 2nd baby, my body will be able to do what it is supposed to do. If I am blessed enough to have an abundant supply, I would be happy to share the wealth with other mothers who are going through what I experienced," writes reader Leinana.

"I live in Las Vegas, NV and I am willing to share milk with those in need! I'm vegan but take vitamins and am very healthy. My daughter is almost 7 months old. I'm actually currently sharing milk with the 7 week old daughter of my best friend, because she had to have emergency surgery yesterday. Its so rewarding to do all I can for her and her daughter. I can't buy her diamonds, but I can make her liquid gold! Please contact me if I can help anyone else in need," writes reader Amey Esparza.

Breastmilk is considered a vegan product and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals direct their members to the website of the Human Milk Banking Association of North America to find an approved milk bank.

this isn't the first time her unique parenting ideas have made the news, last year the star made headlines when she stated that her young son Bear Blu eats his food after she chews it for him.
