THE Academy has released a list of 75 songs that are eligible for this year's Oscar for Best Song.
Among those on the list are songs from the year's biggest pop stars, including Beyonce, to comical options such as an original track from Anchorman 2. Here are our choices for what should (though not necessarily will) be nominated for the golden man.
Lana Del Ray: Young and Beautiful
Five songs from the Baz Luhrmann film are eligible, but Lana Del Rey's haunting ballad has the most buzz (better luck next time, Fergie). Kanye West has even inadvertently contributed to the campaign for the song, using it as the soundtrack for his proposal to Kim Kardashian.
Idina Menzel: Let it Go
Harking back to Disney's glory days, Frozen has a standout number in the form of Idina Menzel's climatic belter. With a breathtaking dramatic crescendo that drops off into a simple chord repetition as Menzel's enchanting voice soars above, this modern classic seems like a strong frontrunner.
Karen O: The Moon Song
Karen O's stripped-down number from Spike Jonze's film, Her, is a bare-bones little treat. Whether it will resonate among the splashier contenders is up in the air, but it's been in heavy rotation for months after first appearing in the film's trailer.
Taylor Swift: Sweeter Than Fiction:
This movie's one chance at an Oscar is probably Taylor Swift's peppy fan favourite. It's not her most original work, but co-penned with fellow hit maker Jack Antonoff of fun., the song only takes one listen to get stuck in your head.
Jose Gonzalez: Stay Alive
Jose Gonzalez's song from The Secret Life of Walter Mitty doesn't seem to have much chance at getting nominated, but hey, you should listen to the song anyway. The Swedish singer-songwriter gives a memorable performance that'll make you need to grab a tissue.
