Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews could be back at work within weeks

Victorian authorities have provided an update on Premier Daniel Andrews’ condition and when he is likely to resume duties.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews is walking around and could be back at work soon, a month after a nasty fall on wet stairs landed him in hospital with spinal injuries.

Acting Premier James Merlino said Mr Andrews’ doctors were happy with his progress and confirmed he was walking around.

The Premier suffered broken ribs and spinal damage after falling at a holiday home on the Mornington Peninsula on March 9.

Mr Andrews last week posted on social media that he was walking for 18 minutes each day and described the injuries as “pretty painful”.

Mr Merlino told reporters this week the Premier was progressing positively after the fall.

“Dan is making progress,“ Mr Merlino said.

“He is walking around, but it is a long and at times painful recovery.

“He’s doing well, his doctors are happy, and it’s still around the six-week period.”

Doctors last month said the Premier had sustained serious injuries that could take him several weeks to recover from.

Mr Andrews fractured his T7 vertebrae and was transferred to The Alfred Hospital specialist trauma centre, but so far no surgery has been completed.

Medical professionals will determine how the 48 year-old will return to work, whether it will be from home or back in the office.

His doctor previously said it would take several weeks for the Premier to recover, and it has now been four weeks since the accident.

Mr Andrews took to social media over Easter, describing his injuries as painful.

He said he was making “steady progress” since the fall and was being diligent with his physio exercises.

“Also building up my walking and am up to about 18 minutes on my daily walk,” he said.

“If you’re giving, receiving, hunting, decorating or eating eggs today – enjoy.”
